Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas women's hockey program faced Davenport for the second time this week on Saturday (Oct. 14), this time at the Patterson Ice Center. The Saints had previously lost 2-1 to the Panthers the night before on home ice. AQ reversed the script on Saturday and won 2-1 on Davenport's ice in their revenge road rematch.
The first period would be back and fourth, but junior
Kylie Rancilio found the back of the net unassisted with a power-play goal with 7:22 remaining in the first. Sophomore
Reyna Dominczak wanted to get in on the action before the end of the first period and would strike true with an assist from
Alyssa Exline with just 27 seconds remaining. Aquinas would end the first period in high spirits as they already surpassed their goals from the previous night of play.
The second period finished scoreless.
Both teams came back on the ice for the third period looking to make an impact on the final outcome. Davenport tried to escape their deficit, while Aquinas wanted to keep it.
The Panthers got within a goal with 9:07 remaining in the final period. But AQ held the Panthers at bay for the remainder of the match, giving the Saints their first victory of the season by splitting the weekend series.
In total, senior AQ goalie
Kadynce Romijn allowed a single goal while blocking 14 shots. While Davenport's Katie Nowak allowed two and blocked 29.
Behind the bench, the result was the first victory for first-year Aquinas head coach
Matthew Bland.
Aquinas is back in action over fall break with conference games against Grand Valley State. The Saints will first play at the Griff's Georgetown Ice Arena in Hudsonville on Friday (Oct. 27), puck drops at 4:30 p.m. Then, the following night (Oct. 28) against GVSU at the South Side Ice Arena.
