#12 Indiana Tech Completes Sweep of AQ Men's Hockey

The Saints conceded five goals in the first, four more in the third to drop fourth straight

Fort Wayne, Ind. — Following a hard-fought 5-2 loss at home Friday night (Oct. 20), the Aquinas men's hockey team couldn't muster the same resiliency Saturday evening (Oct. 21) at Indiana Tech.

The Warriors (7-2, 4-0 WHAC) handily won the rematch by a final score of 9-1 over the Saints (4-8, 2-4 WHAC). Aquinas has now lost four straight after being swept by a pair of Top 25 conference foes — No. 12 Indiana Tech and now-ranked No. 14 UM-Dearborn.

Indiana Tech put the game out of reach early with five goals in the first period. Francesco Santaniell bookended the period with goals with Malik Ali, Colton Nikiforuk and Luke Anderson also finding the back of the net.

Aquinas scored the lone goal in the second period. With 6:26 left in the middle frame, Xavier Erickson notched his fifth goal of the season on the power play with Austin Gilmore and Mitchell Hoon on the assists.

Ali, Aidan Dufort, Avery Smith and Joey Mocnik all scored for Indiana Tech in the third period. The last three goals were all scored short-handed.

After the two WHAC foes only had three combined penalties called on Friday, the tables turned on Saturday. The penalty box was a busy place with 20 minor penalties called between the two teams.

The Warriors outshot the Saints 51-28. AQ netminder Max Johnston made 42 saves in the defeat.

Aquinas looks to get back in the win column next weekend with a single home game on Friday (Oct. 27) against Davenport. The Saints split against the Panthers earlier this season with a 5-1 home win and a 4-3 road loss.

Puck drop of Friday is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. from the Southside Ice Arena.
