Dearborn, Mich. — Tonight (Oct. 25) the Aquinas women's volleyball team traveled to Dearborn to take on UM-Dearborn, being the second contest between the two WHAC competitors. AQ defeated Dearborn 3-0 just one month ago, outscoring Dearborn 75-53. The 10-15 Wolverines (11-15 overall, 7-10 WHAC) went on to shock the Saints (26-6, 13-3 WHAC) and take the match 3-1.
The first set laid a rickety path for the match as Dearborn claimed the opening frame 25-22. Both Aquinas and Dearborn would go on runs in the first. Making for both teams to play "catch-up", but ultimately the Wolverines of Dearborn escaped a Saints' comeback in the first.
AQ recollected and composed themselves going into the second, quickly establishing a 5-1 lead. Dearborn did stretch their arms and collected some points. But their efforts weren't enough as Aquinas capitalized on their momentum with two back-to-back kills by
Samee Teachworth and a finishing block by Teachworth and
Jeralyn Hoppes to seal the set 25-14. Leveling the contest to a set apiece.
The Saints continued their hot-streak as they pushed the differential to 9-5 early in the third. AQ would hiccup with an error, but reclaimed their streak pushing the difference to 12-7. The Wolverines noticed they were cooling off in the third and had to make a move. They fought back and set the tone by making it a one point set (15-14), this forced an Aquinas timeout. Aquinas came back with the energy by taking the next two points (17-14). But the Wolverines would not see themselves fall and ran the score up (20-17) establishing them at a healthy position to contest the set.
The Saints would contest this set but conceded too many errors, running the score to 24-19 in favor of the maize and blue. A valiant effort was made by Aquinas but a Dearborn timeout halted their comeback and Dearborn would strike the final blow and take the third set 25-22.
The Wolverines came to compete, going into the fourth they had the 2-1 lead and the momentum. The fourth had a swift start which saw Dearborn take a 10-7 lead. Dearborn would concede their advantage but would push it straight back. The Wolverines held the Saints at-bay by three points for much of the set.
Dearborn went on a 5-1 run, setting the score to 23-18. Pushed into a corner the Saints would regain some momentum and clamber back the deficit with kills by
Abbi Perkins, an ace from
Julia Schweihofer, and a block from Teachworth and Perkins, setting the score at 23-23. But the Wolverines wouldn't back down and claimed the next two points sealing the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
Perkins lead the Saints in kills with 17, followed by Teachworth (10) and
Jenna Lee (8).
Lydia Harper led in aces for Aquinas with five,
Chloe Hogarth with three and Schweihofer taking three as well.
Saint of the Week
Lauren Chioini continued her defensive spree with five blocks, Hoppes and Teachworth both followed with four each.
Harper was a set piece in motion with 40 assists.
The Aquinas defense was lead by
Jordyn Carlyle with 13 digs,
Peyton Goschka (6) and Hogarth (5).
The Saints are back in action at home on Friday (Oct. 27) against Concordia with a 7 p.m. start. The following day (Oct. 28) Aquinas will be in the swing of it against Madonna with a 12 p.m. start.
