Grand Rapids, Mich. — The No. 8-ranked Aquinas women's soccer team took a little over 10 minutes to get the legs warmed up on a freezing Wednesday evening (Nov. 1) before putting any hope that Indiana Tech had of upset up into flames.
The No. 2-seeded Saints (15-0-3 overall) dominated from start to finish in a 7-0 home win over the No. 7-seeded Warriors (5-11-2 overall) in the opening round of WHAC Tournament. AQ scored five goals before the quarterfinals contest reached halftime.
More impressively, AQ got everybody involved with seven different goal scorers.
Maeva Lichtensteiger picked up assists on the Saints' first three goals scored by
Macy Hollingsworth (14th minute),
Stephanie Ramos (15th minutes) and
Avery Tack (22nd minute) before she scored herself in the 23rd minute.
That's four goals in the span of eight minutes and 34 seconds.
Ramos and
Brittney Probst also picked up assists alongside Lichtensteiger in the scoring spree.
Madison Slezinski joined the goal scoring party in the 31st minute with her third goal this season with
Laia Cunill and
Marie-Louise Abild getting the assists. That gave AQ a 5-0 lead at halftime.
While Aquinas kept tacking on the shots, only two more goals came in the second half from two unlikely scorers.
Candela Vigil-Escalera scored the first one in the 72nd minute for her second goal of the season. Then, with just five second left in regulation, junior transfer
Lauren Niblett poked in her first career goal for the Saints.
Emily Gignac assisted Vigil-Escalera and Cunill got the helper on Niblett's goal.
When the dust finally settled, AQ had outshot Indiana Tech 36-2 (17-0 shots on target).
AQ sophomore goalkeeper
Kayla Shuk broke her own single-season school record with her 14 shutout this season. It's the third time this season she has kept a clean sheet without having to make a single save.
Credit for keeping Shuk untouched goes to the defense in front of her.
Ingrid Hentemann and Tack played all 90 minutes for the Saints back line while
Emma Merchant,
Olivia Bowling,
Jess Graham and
Bridget Sherman helped out as well.
AQ head coach
James DeCosemo played 22 out of the 24 players allowed on his postseason roster. Half of them (11) ended up with either a goal, an assist or both.
Making her second start this season, Indiana Tech goalkeeper Ursula Romero made 10 saves in the defeat. The loss signaled the end of the season for the Warriors.
Aquinas moves on to the WHAC Tournament semifinals on Saturday (Nov. 4) where they will face No. 3-seeded University of Northwestern Ohio. The Racers (12-5-2 overall) are coming off a 3-0 win over No. 6-seeded Rochester on Wednesday.
AQ and UNOH tied 0-0 in the regular season earlier this year on Oct. 7.
If there is another draw on Saturday, then a penalty kick shootout will decide who advances to the conference tournament championship game against the winner of No. 1-seeded Siena Heights and No. 4-seeded Lawrence Tech.
Kickoff for AQ against UNOH is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the AQ Athletic Field following the conclusion of the Aquinas men's soccer team hosting Siena Heights in its WHAC Tournament quarterfinals match at noon.
