AQ Men's Soccer Takes Care of SHU in WHAC Quarterfinals

The Saints beat their same nickname counterparts 4-1 to advance

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The (RV) Aquinas men's soccer team scored off two corner kicks and a free kick to assist in notching a 4-1 win over No. 8-seeded Siena Heights in the WHAC Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4) at the AQ Athletic Field.

Aquinas, the newly crowned WHAC Regular Season champions and the top seed in the conference tournament, improved to 13-2-3 overall with the postseason victory. While SHU's season comes to an end with a 7-9-3 overall record.

After 30 minutes of scoreless play, AQ jumped into the lead off a corner kick taken by Yussef Hakmaoui that was directed to the far post. Josh Freeman-Wright was the first one to the ball and powerfully headed in the opening goal of the contest.

The score remained 1-0 after 45 minutes of play.

Hitting the repeat button 10 minutes into the second half, AQ scored against off another corner kick. Hakmaoui found Freeman-Wright again, except this time the first shot was blocked and defensive midfielder Andrea Ghiggini was present to clean up the rebound, 2-0.

It was Ghiggini's fifth goal of the season — the most he has ever scored in a single-season in his five-year AQ career.

The only Aquinas goal that came from the run of play in the 65th minute featured some great passing from Hakmaoui and Ricardo Rittersberger to unleash Joshua Clemitson. The junior defender worked his way past SHU's back line and picked out to the bottom left corner from the right side of the field to give AQ a 3-0 advantage.

Hakmaoui finished with three assists and now has six assists in the last five games.

With less than four minutes remaining, Siena Heights forward Marcelo Rocha snuck a shot past AQ goalkeeper Antonio Strassioto to break up his shutout bid.

Aquinas retaliated quickly, just two and a half minutes later. After being award a free kick in a dangerous area, Jasper Schinkel converted from long-range to push the final score to 4-1. It was Schinkel's fourth goal of the season to set a new season-high with 11 points.

AQ outshot SHU 20-11 (7-3 shots on target) and had nine more corner kicks (10-1).

Aquinas advances to the WHAC Tournament semifinals for a fourth straight season. They will play the winner of No. 4-seeded Lourdes against No. 5-seeded UNOH, which is being played Saturday evening (Nov. 4). Stay tuned to AQSaints.com for updates.
