Kalamazoo, Mich. – The AQ men's basketball squad returned to action this afternoon (Dec. 29) for an exhibition matchup against the Western Michigan University Broncos. The Saints wrapped up 2023 with a 127-71 result against the NCAA Division I foe.

AQ took an early lead after a pair of buckets from
DeAndre Francis and a three from
Jared Lary put them ahead 7-5. However, the Broncos responded with a 12-0 run to give the home side a double-digit lead heading into the first media timeout. WMU extended this run to 15 before
Devon Boyd snapped the run with six consecutive points to make the score 20-13.

Tommy Gregwer three cut the lead to just six points, but Western Michigan began to pull away again with a 10-0 run. AQ quickly fell behind the DI Broncos' fast-paced attack as Western Michigan turned up the pressure. Boyd and Francis highlighted the first half with 13 points apiece, but the Saints trailed the home side 68-40 entering the locker rooms.
The NCAA Division I home side continued its impressive shooting display in the second half and scored another 57 in the half to finish the game with 127 points. The final score of the exhibition contest was 127-71.
By the Numbers
Western Michigan finished the contest with an impressive 70% shooting from the field, paired with a 60% shooting night beyond the arc. WMU converted 18 three-pointers in total.
The Broncos also held the advantage in rebounds (33-27) and steals (11-2). However, AQ was more efficient from the free throw line, scoring 77.8% to WMU's 68.8%.
Boyd ended the night with a team-high 16 points on 6-7 shooting. He converted three of his four three-point attempts while dishing four assists.
Francis scored 15 points, shooting 7-13 from the field with three boards.
Lary was the third Saint to crack double-digit points with 12 points. He shot 4-13 from the field, converting on one three-pointer and scoring three of his four free throws. He paired his scoring with two rebounds and an assist.

The Saints return home to Grand Rapids next Wednesday (Jan. 3) for a conference matchup against UNOH. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
