Saints Men Race Past Grace Christian, 89-75

AQ shoots nearly 59 percent in the win, receives 58 bench points

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Aquinas men's basketball team shot nearly 59 percent in Wednesday's (Dec. 6) non-league game against Grace Christian inside the Sturrus Center, making 10 three-pointers en route to the 89-75 victory. AQ had 10 different players reach the scoring column and four double-digit scorers in the big home win.

It was the second time in the last three games that the Saints have cracked the 80-point mark, also doing so last Tuesday (Nov. 28) in the 84-80 win at Cleary. AQ was consistent on Wednesday, netting 45 first half points and adding 44 points in the final 20 minutes.

Donovan Brown-Boyd poured in a game-high 20 points in just 19 minutes. He made 7-of-10 shots and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Andrew Larson was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and recorded 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal in another stat-stuffing performance.

Both Tommy Gregwer and Samuel Medendorp notched 10 points. Gregwer knocked down a pair of three-pointers and all four free throw tries, while Medendorp was 5-for-6 from the field and grabbed four boards. DeAndre Francis tallied eight points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Bennett Sinner contributed eight points and four rebounds in eight very active minutes for the Saints.

Aquinas shot 58.8 percent from the field and drained five three-pointers in each half. Overall, AQ went 19-of-23 from the free throw line. The Saints held large edges in bench points (58-27) and in the paint (38-26).

It was a close 35-33 game nearing the four-minute mark of the first half. Gregwer sank two free throws and Francis made a jumper in the paint to start a 10-4 run. Both Gregwer and Brown-Boyd drilled three-pointers in a 40-second span to help the Saints take a 45-37 cushion to halftime.

AQ continued that run into the second half, netting the first nine points and prompting a Grace Christian timeout. Medendorp scored on two layups, Kaleb Mitchelson hit two free throws, and Devon Boyd buried a three-pointer off a Mitchelson assist for the 54-37 lead. Back-to-back-to-back triples from Brown-Boyd (two) and Larson (one) upped the advantage to a game-high 22 points at 65-43 with 13:32 remaining.

Grace Christian would only get as close as 12 points the remainder of the game. The Saints limited GCU to 42.4 percent shooting and outrebounded the visitors, 38-25.

Boyd recorded seven points, five rebounds, and two assists, while Jared Lary added six points, two boards, and two assists. Mitchelson tied Francis for a team-best four assists. 15 different players saw the floor for AQ in Wednesday's win.

Aquinas is back in action on Saturday (Dec. 6), with #20 Lourdes coming to the Sturrus Center. The men's tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. during the sixth annual Holiday Hoops event.
