Grand Rapids, Michigan — The Aquinas men's basketball team went shot-for-shot with No. 6 nationally ranked Indiana Tech and fell six points short on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 11). The Warriors won 80-74 inside the Sturrus Center to pick up their eighth straight win.
The inspired performance from the Saints (11-14, 7-11 WHAC) came on Senior Day. AQ honored three seniors prior to the game:
Fernando Alvarez-May,
Hunter Huff and
Gabe Overway.
Overway poured in a career-high 32 points on 10-for-15 shooting and 11-for-14 from the free throw. It's the most points an Aquinas player has scored in a single game since former Saint
Sammie Ryans notched 33 points back on Feb. 1, 2022, against Madonna.
In the first half, Overway scored 18 points in 16 minutes and was the only Saint to make multiple field goals.
Menalito McGee's only bucket gave AQ its largest lead at 27-20 with seven minutes left in the opening frame.
The Warriors responded and went up 35-34 after a pair of free throws made by Blake Davison. Tied at 37-37, Indiana Tech scored the last four points of the first half on a pair of jumpers made by Rog Stein.
Stein finished with a team-high 21 points on 9-for-18 shooting. Josh Kline (15 points), Grant Smith (14) and Cory McKinney (10) also reached double figures for the Warriors.
Aquinas got within three points three times in the second half (54-51, 56-53 and 58-55) but weren't able to draw even.
Payton Harley made all four of his shot attempts in the second half to finish with nine points. AQ freshman forward
Donovan Brown-Boyd scored seven of his 10 points in the second half as well.
Nick Henry showcased a variety of power moves in the paint to score eight points off the AQ bench.
The Saints shot 55.3% in the contest, while the Warriors shot 47.5%. Yet, Indiana Tech won the rebound battle 30-25 (7-5 on offensive rebounds) and only committed seven turnovers.
Aquinas, still clinging onto the eighth and last spot to make the WHAC Tournament, will play a critical game on Wednesday (Feb. 15) at UNOH, the team trying to knock them out of a postseason spot. The Racers are a game back and would hold the tiebreaker over AQ with a win to sweep the season series.
Tipoff from Lima, Ohio, is schedule for 7:30 p.m.
