AQ Women's Hockey Ties With Concordia, 3-3

The Saints draw for the first time since Jan. 21, 2022

Chelsea, Michigan — Sixty-five minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner between the Aquinas women's hockey team and the Concordia Cardinals on Saturday night (Feb. 11).

The two CCWHA foes settled for a 3-3 draw in a non-counting game toward the conference standings where a shootout result wasn't required.

Both teams scored once in the first period and twice in the second period.

Concordia (8-13-1) scored first with a power-play goal converted by Makayla Steinmetz halfway through the opening frame. Aquinas (7-13-1) answered five minutes later on a goal by Olivia Menard, her second tally of the weekend after scoring AQ's lone goal in a 6-1 defeat to No. 7-ranked McKendree on Friday night.

The Cardinals picked up two goals early into the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Dakota Harmon found the back of the net first, 26 seconds into the period, before Steinmetz netted her second goal of the game shorthanded.

The Saints' power play came through 27 seconds after Steinmetz's goal to cut the lead back down to 3-2. Ava Seychel, who assisted Menard's earlier goal, got on the scoresheet with Menard and Gabi Popperl providing the helpers.

Natalie Vaitas buried the equalizer and what turned out to be the final goal of the game with 6:47 remaining in the second period. Madison Morgrette picked up an assist.

After a scoreless third period and a 5-minute overtime session, the game ended in a time. It's the first draw Aquinas has been apart of since Jan. 21, 2022, when they tied 0-0 at the Traverse City Showcase against Michigan.

AQ goaltender Ashley Suske made 37 saves, as Concordia outshot Aquinas 40-33.

Aquinas closes out the regular season with a pair of home games against Lake Superior State next weekend at the Southside Ice Arena. Puck drop at 9:30 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 17) and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 18).
