Box Score 2 Lima, Ohio — The first conference road trip of the season was unkind for the Aquinas men's and women's tennis teams. Both programs lost to WHAC title contenders, the Racers from the University of Northwestern Ohio, on Saturday (Feb. 18) at the Westwood Tennis & Fitness Center in Lima, Ohio.
The men (1-2, 0-1 WHAC) lost 6-1 to the No. 4-ranked Racers, while the women (0-3, 0-1 WHAC) were blanked 7-0.
Tom Gangov picked up the Saints' lone win of the day after UNOH's No. 1 singles player Giovanni Branchetti had to retire from their match.
The men only played three other games in the match that were decided by two sets or less. Gangov and
Josep Coll Llopis lost a close No. 1 doubles match 6-4 against Branchetti and Pablo Lopez Real, and both AQ No. 3
Max Goldbeck-Lowe and No. 4
Nicholas Klak lost a pair of games 6-4 during singles play.
The Saints did manage to avoid being swept 6-0 in any of the single game sets.
As for the women, the short-handed Saints forfeited the No. 3 doubles and the No. 6 singles match. Yet, Aquinas didn't go down with a fight. The No. 1 doubles pair of
Joska Volder and
Sofia Gomez took Ana Cetina and Jelena Lopicic to the brink before losing 7-6 (5).
Volder also made Cetina work for a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Gomez battled with Lopicic at No. 2 singles, but ultimately lost 6-4, 6-1. The Saints lost a thriller at No. 3 singles as well, as
Carlota Arzabe was outlasted by Alizee Ripolles by set scores of 7-5, 7-5.
Mimi Pacheco suffered the same fate as Gomez, losing the No. 4 singles bout by the same scoreline of 6-4, 6-1 against Veronika Kovalchuk. Rounded out the rotation, No. 5
Alyssa Jack fell 6-2, 6-1 to Dayana Morejon.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 25) at home against Cardinal Stritch. Both matches are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. from the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Center.
