LTU Deals AQ Men's Hockey Fifth Straight Defeat

Three third period goals lift No. 16-ranked Blue Devils over the Saints

Farmington Hills, Michigan — Lawrence Tech scored five goals Friday night (Feb. 3) to hand deliver the fifth consecutive loss for the Aquinas men's hockey team.

The No. 16-ranked Blue Devils (20-6, 15-6 WHAC) won 5-2 with three third period goals making the difference on their home ice. The Saints fell to 13-15 overall (8-10 WHAC) with the loss.

Three goals in less than three minutes while nearing the end of the first period of play provided plenty of entertainment.

After AQ went down a goal, Brandon Rozema netted the equalizer with 4:14 left in the opening frame. Mitchell Hoon and Alex Johnson provided the assists. It was Rozema's 15th goal of the season.

A little over a minute later with 3:09 remaining in the first period, LTU's Blake Heier scored to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Following a scoreless second period, the Saints pulled level again at 2-2 with 17:33 left in regulation. Brendan McCatty put in the game-tying goal with the assists going to Christian Look and Shane DiTullio.

However, yet again, the score didn't remain tied for very long. With 16:17 on the clock, Ian Kuntz scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal for Lawrence Tech.

Liam Bland, who scored LTU's first goal, added another tally for insurance with under three and a half minutes to play.

Aquinas played with a 6-on-3 advantage for roughly 30 seconds late in the contest, but the Blue Devils held firm. LTU added an empty-net goal with 21 seconds to go, pushing the final score out to 5-2.

The penalty box was busy throughout the night with 38 penalty minutes called (14 minor penalties and a 10-minute game misconduct to LTU).

Lawrence Tech narrowly outshot Aquinas, 59-58, with both teams making it a priority to get pucks to the net.

The Saints will seek revenge on Saturday (Feb. 4) with a home contest against the Blue Devils. Puck drop at 8 p.m. from the Southside Ice Arena.
