Grand Rapids, Michigan — The Aquinas men's tennis won its first spring match on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4) against in-city NCAA Division III foe Calvin.
Coming off a loss Friday to Davenport, the Saints (1-1) bounced back with a 6-3 win over the Knights at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
AQ won two out of the three doubles matches with the No. 1 pair of
Tom Gangov and
Josep Coll Llopis winning 8-2 and the No. 2 pair of
Max Goldbeck-Lowe and
Nicholas Klak picking up an 8-6 victory.
All four also went on to win their singles matches. No. 1 Gangov topped Harrison Sindelar in a third set tiebreaker (4-6, 6-4, 10-5). No. 2 Coll Llopis easily took care of Corwin Kim (6-4, 6-1). No. 3 Goldbeck-Lowe rolled to a straight sets win over Emmanuel Hen Estrada (6-3, 6-3). And, last but not least, No. 4 Klak needed a third set tiebreaker to edge Stuart Johnston (4-6, 6-2, 10-7).
No. 5 singles player
Jackson VanBergen lost a close match to Ryan Broek (6-1, 1-6, 12-10) and No. 6
Mariano Arroyo suffered a pair of 7-6 set defeats to Adam Zentner.
Aquinas starts conference play next weekend at (RV) Indiana Tech.
