Grand Rapids, Mich. — Unable to fill all the needed spots, the Aquinas women's tennis team forfeited two points and lost 5-4 at Calvin on Saturday evening (Feb. 4) at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
The Saints (0-2) currently only have five players and will be giving away free points for the rest of the spring season unless they can find away to expanded their roster. Being short-handed was certainly felt on Saturday, as the two points forfeited in the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches ultimately gave the win away to the nearby NCAA Division III opponent.
In the matches that were played, Aquinas won four out of the seven.
The doubles competition couldn't have gone much better. The No. 1 pairing of
Joska Volder and
Sofia Gomez rolled to an 8-0 win over Tessa Holman and Maggie Shoemaker. The No. 2 pairing of
Carlota Arzabe and
Mimi Pacheco didn't have much trouble either in an 8-2 victory over Lexy Ganop and Julia Hooker.
All five singles matches went two sets with no tiebreakers.
No. 1 Volder (6-2, 6-3) and No. 3 Arzabe (6-1, 6-4) picked up the wins for AQ. No. 2 Gomez suffered a pair of 6-4 set losses to Holman, No. 4 Pacheco couldn't get past Ganop (6-4, 6-2) and No. 5
Alyssa Jack was edged out by Marissa Baker (6-3, 6-2) in the other three singles matches.
Aquinas starts WHAC play next week Friday (Feb. 10) at No. 19-ranked Indiana Tech.
