Saints Drop Two Games to No. 8 Miami

Miami of Ohio won the first game by a score of 2-1 on Friday; finished series with a 7-0 victory on Saturday.

Oxford, Ohio – The women's volleyball squad traveled to Ohio this weekend to take on the No. 8-ranked Miami RedHawks on Friday (Feb. 3) and Saturday (Feb. 4). Miami scored two in the second period on Friday to take an early lead. AQ scored one goal in the third period, but couldn't quite complete the comeback in the first game.

The second game that took place today (Feb. 4) was not as close as Miami got ahead early and remained ahead the entirety of the game. The final score finished with a 7-0 score in favor of the RedHawks.

The Saints now move to 7-12 on the season with a 5-7 CCWHA conference record.

Game 1: #8 Miami 2, Aquinas 1

Miami entered the first matchup with a game plan to slow the Saints down on offense. The home team did just that, holding AQ to just two shots on net throughout the first period. Miami University managed to generate several good scoring chances, but AQ net minder, Kadynce Romijn saved all 17 of MU's shots on net to keep the score level at 0-0 entering the first intermission.

The game picked up quite a bit in the second period with both teams generating some offense. However, the home side was the first one to open up the scoring with a powerplay goal halfway through the period. Miami doubled its lead after an even-strength goal with 3:52 left on the clock. The Saints generated eight shots on the net, but the RedHawks held the Saints goalless after two periods of play.

An early goal from Kylie Rancilio gave hope to the Saints. Her goal came with 17:16 left to play in the period and left the home team with just a one-goal advantage. The powerplay goal was assisted by McKenna Kaczor and Lauryn Wood.

Aquinas outshot Miami 11-10 throughout the rest of the third period, but neither side was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game. Miami snuck away with a 2-1 lead in the first game.

Romijn played well in net for Aquinas, saving 44 of 46 shots on net for a .957 save percentage.

Game 2: #8 Miami 7, Aquinas 0

Similarly, to the first game, both teams engaged in a defensive battle throughout the first period. Miami had several good scoring chances, but neither side managed to score throughout the first 20 minutes of play.

Midway through the second, Miami finally earned themselves a lead after finding the back of the net. The RedHawks held the puck in AQ's third of the ice for the majority of the second period leading up to the goal. The pressure continued and Miami managed to slip the puck past Romijn for the second time with a little over three minutes left to go in the second period.

The Saints were unable to generate a lot of offense in the second and the game headed to the third period with the score 2-0 in favor of the home side.

Miami broke the scoring open in the third period with AQ struggling to fend off the continuous pressure from the nationally-ranked RedHawks. Miami scored five more goals throughout the third period to earn a 7-0 victory after 60 minutes of play.

AQ's tough stretch of games continues this Friday (Feb. 10) with a home matchup against the No. 6-ranked McKendree Bearcats. The puck is scheduled to drop at 6:30 PM at Southside Ice Arena.
