Orlando, Fla. — Playing outdoors in the sun isn't quite the norm for the Aquinas men's tennis team, but they adapted well to earn a slim 4-3 victory over Florida Palms on Sunday (Mar. 12). It was the Saints second win this spring season (2-4 overall) and a positive way to kick off their four-game Spring Break Trip in Orlando, Fla.
AQ lost out on the doubles point available with Florida Palms winning the No. 1 and No. 3 pairings by scores of 6-3 and 6-1, respectively. The Saints' lone doubles victory at No. 2 was earned by
Max Goldbeck-Lowe and
Nicholas Klak, topping Nicolo Marchetti and Dex Leyers by a score of 6-3.
Aquinas now had to win four out the six singles matches, but were given a much-needed point when Leyers had to retire early into his match against Goldbeck-Lowe at No. 3 single.
Needing three more points, No. 1
Tom Gangov battled out a 7-5, 7-5 win against Marchetti. No. 2
Josep Coll Llopis went three hard-fought sets against Janis Mausli to claim a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-3. And, last but not least, No. 5 Klak had the most comfortable victory at 6-3, 6-1 over Erwan Taburet.
Mariano Arroyo and
Jackson VanBergen lost at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to give the Owls their other two points. VanBergen battled back after a rough first set to fall 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
The men's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 14) against Connecticut College. The match is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. from the Red Bug Park in Orlando, Fla.
