AQ Women's Tennis Topped by DII Southern New Hampshire

The Saints lost their opening Spring Break Trip match 6-1 against an undefeated opponent

Orlando, Fla. — The Aquinas women's tennis team picked up a point the hard way on Monday (Mar. 13) but couldn't keep the momentum going in a 6-1 loss to NCAA Division II foe Southern New Hampshire, who improved to 13-0 overall this season.

The Saints (0-5), playing their first Spring Break Trip match of the week at the USTA Center in Orlando, Fla., won the lone doubles' point on offer for the first time this spring season. To do so, AQ had to win both the No. 1 and No. 2 pairings because the Saints only have five student-athletes on the roster and have to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matchups.

Sofia Gomez and Joska Volder won a very close 7-6 No. 1 doubles bout against Guntra Upeniece and Katelyn Nichols, followed by Mimi Pacheco and Carlota Arzabe taking the No. 2 matchup over Amelie Proulx and Eleonra Guglielmetti by a score of 6-1.

Singles, however, weren't as kind to the Saints. Out of the 11 sets played, AQ won one of them. Five of the sets were decided 6-1 in favor of the Penmen and three more were 6-0 sweeps.

No. 3 Arzabe won AQ's lone singles set in a three-set loss to Alexxa Etienne (6-3, 1-6, 10-3).

No. 2 Gomez and No. 5 Alyssa Jack had the next two closest losses with a pair of 6-1, 6-1 defeats.

Aquinas looks to bounce back tomorrow (Mar. 14) against Marywood. Game action is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. from the USTA Center in Orlando, Fla.
