Box Score Orlando, Fla. — The first one is out of the way, as the Aquinas women's tennis team defeated Marywood on Tuesday (Mar. 14) to win for the first time this spring season.
The Saints (1-5 overall) knocked off the NCAA Division III opponent, 7-2, at the USTA Center in Orlando, Fla. Marywood dropped to 2-6 overall on the season.
AQ won all seven matchups that were played and forfeited two points to Marywood by not having enough players to compete in the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles contests.
The Saints only dropped one game in doubles action.
Sofia Gomez and
Joska Volder won 8-1 in the top pairing, while
Mimi Pacheco and
Carlota Arzabe swept the No. 2 matchup, 8-0.
In singles, AQ continued to dominate. No. 1 Volder swept Gabriella Nowak 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 Gomez rolled to a pair of 6-1 set wins over Allison Bashore. No. 3 Arzabe added a 6-1, 6-0 win against McKenna Seavey.
No. 4 Pacheco and No. 5
Alyssa Jack capped the day by both picked up their first single wins of the spring season. It was also the first collegiate career win for Jack out of Portland, Mich. None of the single matches went longer than eight games with Pacheco winning 6-1, 6-0, and Jack winning a pair of 6-2 sets.Â
The Saints added a match against Curry College that was scheduled to be played this morning at 9:30 a.m. but rain had other ideas and forced the last-minute addition to be canceled. AQ is hopefully the rain will pass through the area and they will get to play Millsaps at 1:30 p.m. today (Mar. 15) in Orlando, Fla.
