AQ Tennis Dealt Two Defeats Friday at Indiana Tech

The women fell 6-1, while the men were blanked 7-0

Fort Wayne, Ind. — A challenging early season conference test for the Aquinas men's and women's tennis teams didn't go the Saints way on Friday (Mar. 3) at Indiana Tech.

The No. 19-ranked Warriors on the women's side picked up a 6-1 victory over the Saints (0-4 overall record), while the (RV) Warriors on the men's side swept the Saints, 7-0.

Sofia Gomez picked up AQ's lone win of the afternoon at the Wildwood Racquet Club. She defeated Thaina Carvalho at No. 2 singles by scores of 1-6, 6-3, 10-8. It was her first singles win of the spring season.

The No. 1 singles match between AQ's Joska Volder and ITU's Abigail Simms was also fairly close with Simms edging out the win 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Only four Saints on the women's side competed with Mimi Pacheco losing a pair of 6-3 sets at No. 3 singles and No. 4 Alyssa Jack suffering a 6-0, 1-0 defeat.

The two double matches played both finished 6-1 with Volder/Gomez and Pacheco/Jack on the losing side. The third doubles match was forfeited, as were the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches due to a lack of available players for Aquinas.

As for the men (1-4 overall record), a handful of close individual matches all tipped in the Warriors' favor. AQ put up a fight in nearly every game, only getting shutout 6-0 twice across the duration of the match.

The scores from the singles matches:

No. 1 Tom Gangov defeated by Michel Zobel (6-3, 6-4).
No. 2 Josep Coll Llopis defeated by Tyler Sinclair (6-3, 6-2).
No. 3 Max Goldbeck-Lowe defeated by Juan Avellaneda (6-2, 6-1).
No. 4 Mariano Arroyo defeated by Andres Pizzamiglio (5-7, 6-0, 10-1).
No. 5 Nicholas Klak defeated by Jorge Rodriguez (7-6(3), 6-3).
No. 6 Jackson VanBergen defeated by Anastasis Lavdas (7-5, 6-0).

The doubles matches ended in the same fate with Gangov/Coll Llopis going down 6-3 and the other two pairs of Goldbeck-Lowe/Klak and Arroyo/VanBergen taking 6-2 losses.

Next up, the Saints are headed to Florida for their Spring Break Trip. The men are currently schedule to play three matches against Connecticut (Mar. 14), Millsaps (Mar. 15) and Scranton (Mar. 17). The women are scheduled to take on Marywood (Mar. 14) and Millsaps (Mar. 15).

Both teams resume conference play on Friday, March 24, against Lawrence Tech inside the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Center.
