#8 Saints Suffer Second OT Loss in Defeat at #7 Siena Heights

Aquinas falls in heart-breaking fashion again on the road, losing 10-9 on a SHU golden goal

Adrian, Mich. — One overtime loss is hard enough to swallow. The No. 8-ranked Aquinas men's lacrosse team returns home with the weight of two on their shoulders now after a 10-9 extra frame loss to No. 7-ranked Siena Heights on Saturday night (Apr. 15) in Adrian, Mich. This comes after AQ lost to No. 9-ranked Lawrence Tech, 11-10 in overtime, on Wednesday (Apr. 12).

Dillon Baldwin scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds left in the first overtime to lift SHU to a hard-fought, come-from-behind conference win.

Siena Heights improved to 6-4 overall (4-2 WHAC), while Aquinas moves to 6-6 overall (3-3 WHAC).

AQ stormed out of the gates by scoring the first four goals of the game in the first five minutes and 10 seconds. Jon Jardis, Jack Rioux, William Blanchard and Hunter Roberts picked up the goals with Jardis and Dean Cooper also getting assists.

The first quarter was still far from over. Five more goals flew in — two for AQ and three for Siena Heights to help them get back into the contest. Brady Waling and Nico Kittredge scored for Aquinas.

Both teams tightened up defensively in the second quarter. Devin Plemmons finally scored for SHU with 4:09 left before halftime. Mitch Haggart had the answer for Aquinas and restored the Saints three-goal lead at the halfway point of regulation, 7-4.

Haggart surfaced two more times early into the third period to extend the AQ lead out to 9-4. He first assisted a Cooper goal before notching his second goal of the game with nine minutes left in the quarter.

Siena Heights began to turn the momentum around with a Jake Gallaher goal in the final seconds of the third quarter. From that point on, everything seemed to go against AQ.

SHU scored four unanswered goals in the fourth to force overtime. Gallaher had two before assisting the game-tying goal by Eric Csizmadia with 1:32 remaining.

Siena Heights outshot Aquinas 18-2 in the fourth quarter (52-34 for the game).

After both sides had quality chances to win the game in overtime, Gallaher set up Baldwin for the golden goal winner with 33 seconds left on the clock. It was recorded as Baldwin's first and only shot of the game.

Eight different AQ players scored the Saints nine goals. Haggart finished with three points (two goals, one assist), while Jardis and Cooper each had a goal and an assist.

AQ goalie Clayton Boerigter made 16 saves in the defeat for the Saints.

Aquinas looks to regroup with two conference home games to close out the regular season. The Saints will first take on (RV) Madonna on Wednesday (Apr. 19) at 5:30 p.m. Senior Day will follow on Saturday (Apr. 22) against No. 5-ranked Indiana Tech, starting at 1 p.m. from the Aquinas College Athletic Field.
