AQ Baseball Splits Pair of 7-Inning Games Against Lourdes

The Saints fell 7-4 in the opener before bouncing back with a 10-0 shutout win in the nightcap

Caledonia, Mich. — After Conor Gausselin threw a two-hitter on Tuesday, Evan Douglass one-upped his teammate with a stellar one-hitter performance on Wednesday (Apr. 19) to help the Saints salvage a split against Lourdes.

Aquinas (22-19, 12-10 WHAC) dropped Game 1 after the Gray Wolves (17-20, 13-11 WHAC) scored four runs in the seventh inning to win 7-4. The Saints bounced back with a 10-0 mercy win after seven innings behind Douglass' standout outing.

AQ has split its last three doubleheader, this one come on Davenport's baseball field. The Saints were forced to relocate from the Meijer Sports Complex due to the field condition and more rain in the forecast.

Game 1: Lourdes 7, Aquinas 4 (7 Innings)

After two scoreless innings, both teams got on the scoreboard in the third frame. Lourdes opened the scoring on the more flashy play with an RBI ground-rule double, while Aquinas answered with Dane Smitz groundout to third base to allow Luke Lacross score.

Harrison Jackson increased Lourdes' lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning with an RBI double to left field and then reached home by stealing third base and advancing home on a throwing error by the catcher.

The Saints pulled back even with Chase Ingersoll hitting his own RBI double down the left line in the fourth and a Lourdes' fielding error in the sixth to plate Jake Paganelli.

Scoring in the exact same fashion, the Gray Wolves notched four runs in the seventh to put the game away. Michael Strzelewicz dropped in yet another double to score three runs before an AQ error in the infield allowed the seventh run to score.

Aquinas had its first two batters reach base in the bottom of the seventh, but could only muster one more run on an RBI groundout by Grant Martin.

Despite losing by three runs, AQ outhit Lourdes 10-8. Both teams committed two errors.

Nathan Wilcox went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Saints.

Game 2: Aquinas 10, Lourdes 0 (7 Innings)

AQ turned things around in the rematch. In what was supposed to be a nine-inning game, the Saints invoked the 10-run mercy rule after seven innings.

Five of the runs came in the fifth inning. And only five RBIs were given out in the contest. Lourdes finished with four errors, three of which allowed Aquinas to score the other five runs. Paganelli (2), Smitz, Martin and JD Gillies came through with the timely RBI hits.

Smitz led the way going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and the one RBI. Seven other Saints each recorded one hit. AQ racked up 10 hits as a team, compared to Gray Wolves with just one.

Lourdes' lonely knock came in the seventh inning with one out to break up Douglass' no-hit bid. Strzelewicz doubled down the left field line.

Douglass threw 95 pitches and faced 25 batters in his complete game effort. He struck out three and walked two, while improving to 3-0 overall on the season.

AQ stole four bases in the contest. One each for Smitz, Wilcox, Jayden Timmer and Braden Brown.

The Saints now prepare to play the Saints of Siena Heights in four straight games with back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday (Apr. 22) and Sunday (Apr. 23) in Adrian, Mich. Both days are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
