Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas men's tennis team won twice over the weekend to improve their seeding at the upcoming WHAC Tournament.
The Saints (7-6, 3-3 WHAC) only dropped two points by sweeping Concordia on the road, 7-0, and toppling Lourdes at home the following day, 5-2.
Friday (Apr. 21): Aquinas 7, Concordia 0
The Saints continued their long-standing tradition of soaring past the Cardinals. Since 2017, AQ is 8-0 against Concordia and has outscored them 60-1 with seven sweeps.
The Cardinals were grounded once again on Friday, as the Saints won all nine matches by sets of 6-1 or 6-0.
Concordia had to forfeit to No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to lack of players.
Saturday (Apr. 22): Aquinas 5, Lourdes 2
Saturday at Hope's DeWitt Tennis Center provided to be more competitive.
Aquinas got off to a fast start by winning all three doubles matches. Top pair
Josep Coll Llopis and
Tom Gangov, plus No. 2
Max Goldbeck-Lowe and
Nicholas Klak both won rather comfortably with 6-2 and 6-1 wins, respectively.
Mariano Arroyo and
Jackson VanBergen edged out a 6-4 win in the No. 3 doubles matchup.
All six singles matches went two sets. AQ got its four wins from Gangov at No. 1, Goldbeck-Lowe at No. 3, Arroyo at No. 4 and Klak at No. 5.
The WHAC Tournament, hosted by UNOH, begins Wednesday (Apr. 26) in Lima, Ohio. The Saints enter the conference tournament at the No. 4 seed out of seven teams. They will face No. 5 Lawrence Tech (7-12, 2-4 WHAC) in the first round at 8 a.m. with the winner advancing to face top-seeded UNOH in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. later in the evening.
The championship match will be held Thursday (Apr. 27) at 10 a.m.
