AQ Men's Tennis Defeated by Rival Cornerstone

The Saints lost 6-1 with their lone point coming in No. 3 singles

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of (RV) Cornerstone on Wednesday evening (Apr. 5) inside the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Saints (5-6, 1-3 WHAC) couldn't slow the Golden Eagles (5-6, 2-2 WHAC) down and had their two-match winning streak snapped.

Cornerstone swept the doubles match with two of them going at least 10 games. At No. 2, Jaden Bender and Jose Oliva won a 3-0 tiebreaker to win their match, 7-6, over Max Goldbeck-Lowe and Nicholas Klak. At No. 3, Jackson VanBergen and Mariano Arroyo narrowly lost 6-4 to Joaquin Michaloni and Luis Felipe Azurduy.

The singles portion went 5-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Goldbeck-Lowe captured the Saints only win at No. 3 singles with a come from behind 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 three-set victory over Micheloni.

The only other contest to go three sets was at the top No. 1 match-up between Santiago Castellanos and Tom Gangov. Castellanos won 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.

Gangov's doubles parter, Josep Coll Llopis, went down 6-1, 6-0, to Andres Jimenez. Arroyo, Klak and VanBergen suffered a similar fate in two-set singles defeats.

The Saints are still waiting to confirm when they will play again with two conference matches against Lourdes and Concordia pending to be scheduled in the coming weeks. Both WHAC contests have to be played before the conference tournament that is being held Apr. 26-27 at UNOH.

Aquinas is also scheduled to play in the Doc Richards Tournament, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan, on Apr. 20-22 in Marion, Ind.
