#8 Saints Settle for 0-0 Tie in Season Opener Against #14 Indiana Wesleyan

No goals for either side, but AQ outshoots the Wildcats, 10-6

Grand Rapids, Mich. — Ninety minutes wasn't enough to separate two Top-15 women's soccer teams in the NAIA on an unusually hot and humid August evening in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The No. 8-ranked Aquinas Saints arguably had the better goal scoring opportunities, even having one called back on a tight offsides, but No. 14-ranked Indiana Wesleyan held firm and the two sides left the AQ Athletic Field with zeros still on the scoreboard. Despite outshooting the Wildcats (1-0-1) by a 10-6 margin (5-2 shots on target), it ended up being a scoreless season and home opener for the Saints (0-0-1).

The Aquinas defense prevented Indiana Wesleyan from getting a shot on target in the first half. Ingrid Hentemann, Avery Tack, Bridget Sherman and Olivia Bowling solidified a strong starting back four in front of sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Shuk. With two saves in the second half, Shuk picked up her 14th career shutout.

The Saints thought they had their first goal of the season late into the first half after some crisp passing. Stephanie Ramos found Marie-Louise Abild in behind, who then cut the ball back across the box to a wide-open Brittney Probst. The junior Toledo transfer finished the opportunity only to look over and see the flag raised for offsides.

AQ forced Indiana Wesleyan freshman goalkeeper Avery Sluss to make five saves on shots from Laia Cunill (3), Sydney Shenk and Probst.

The Saints rotated in five substitutes throughout a season-opening content that featured two water breaks because of the heat.

Next up, Aquinas looks to pick up its first win and goal of this season at home against Saint Ambrose on Sept. 2 at the AQ Athletic Field. The women will play first at 2 p.m. with the AQ men's soccer to follow at 4:30 p.m. against Taylor.
