Saints Roll Past Rochester in 3-0 Sweep

AQ women's volleyball pumps up the jams on 90's Night

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Aquinas women's volleyball welcomed Rochester for their third annual 90's Night on Wednesday (Sept. 13).

The Saints defeated the Warriors in three, by set scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-12. With the victory AQ continues their winning season to an overall record of 11-3 (1-0 WHAC), in addition to being 9-1 in the past 10 matches.

The first frame was off to a competitive start as AQ and Rochester were neck and neck until a kill by Michelle Domey led to a serving hot streak by Cece Pelak. Here the Saints hit the afterburners and cruised away from the Warriors. Rochester managed to pick up a few kills, but couldn't maintain through the smoke. Leaving Aquinas to take the first set by a 10-point difference.

The second set found the Warriors pulling back and keeping pace with AQ. Rochester was at a two-point deficit at midway through the second, until Jennifer Johnson stepped back to serve. Johnson would run up the score as if she was Kevin McCallister running up the hotel bill. Johnson would have a staggering nine point service run, putting AQ at a 12-point lead, four of Johnson's serves would result in aces. With the wind in their sales Aquinas would pick up the final set points like the crumbs on McCallister's room service, claiming the set 25-14.

As the match found itself at 2-0 for the Saints, the Aquinas Dance Team took to the floor for their 90's Night performance in front of packed house inside the Sturrus Center.

AQ showed their dominance and mustered a few runs in the third set, swiftly finding themselves at a 12-point advantage. With the neon wind breakers and knee high socks at their back, Aquinas would finish the set with a dump by setter Lydia Harper. The Saints would slide their way to a 25-12 finish.

Abbi Perkins reestablish why she is the reigning WHAC Attacker of the Week by having a match high of 16 kills, followed by Samee Teachworth (8) and Jenna Lee (6). AQ brought home double-digit aces (10), Johnson takes home the match high (5), followed by Pelak (3) and Harper (2). Perkins shows her defensive prowess with the match high in blocks (5), Lauren Chioini clocked in with four, while Teachworth had two. Harper continued her assist spree with 34. Jordyn Carlyle tapped in with 13 digs, Pelak with nine and Peyton Goschka rung up five.

Aquinas will return like "The Mack" to play again on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at Siena Heights.
