Grand Rapids, Mich. — Six different goal scorers lifted the Aquinas men's soccer team past 10-man Goshen on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 16) for a memorable 6-0 homecoming win at the AQ Athletic Field.
The Saints (4-1-1) are now undefeated in their last four games while outscoring their opponents 15-0. Goshen dropped to 1-7-1 on the season.
The first two goals on Saturday came from the penalty spot. AQ's leading goal scorer,
Ricardo Rittersberger, drew the foul in the box as he collided with Goshen's goalkeeper and then stepped up to the spot.
Unfazed in a scoreless game that was approaching the 40th minute, Rittersberger smashed the ball into the bottom left corner for his sixth goal of the season — now tied for the most in the conference with Cleary's Lesman Morazan.
Aquinas went to halftime up a single goal, despite outshooting Goshen 9-3.
The floodgates quickly opened in the second half when Goshen's Jorge Keller Martins was shown a red card in the 54th minute for purposefully stopping an AQ attack inside the 18-yard box.
Defender
Andrea Ghiggini was given the honor of taking the Saints' second penalty kick of the match. Ghiggini also picked out the bottom left corner and the Saints celebrated accordingly.
Two minutes later, on a ball Goshen failed to clear out, senior midfielder
Jai Tahlan blasted in a low-driven shot from distance to give AQ a 3-0 lead.
Joshua Clemitson in the 61st minute,
Damir Sabanovic in the 79th minute and
Fikret Hasovic in the 88th minute all joined the goal scoring party.
Milan Hoeffnagel,
Fin Pittock,
Jasper Schinkel and Rittersberger all picked up assists.
Defensively, the Saints kept another clean sheet. AQ has five shutouts in six games played this season. Aquinas hasn't allowed a goal in 370 minutes of game time.
Senior goalkeeper
Antonio Strassioto earned career shutout No. 25 by making three saves. AQ defenders
Joe Lockey,
Jesunifemi Ojutalayo,
Josh Freeman-Wright,
Andrea Ghiggini,
Milan Hoeffnagel and
Timothy Phillips all logged minutes to keep Strassioto safe.
The Saints begin conference play next Saturday (Sept. 23) at home against Concordia. AQ holds a 8-2 record against the Cardinals over the last 10 meetings. Concordia has started the 2023 season with a 1-4-1 record, but are averaging 2.5 goals per game.
