Byron Center, Mich. — The Aquinas men's hockey team wrapped up a three-game home stand with a 5-1 win over Davenport on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 24) at the Southside Ice Arena. Five different Saints scored in the contest.
AQ (2-1 overall) broke a scoreless deadlock at the very end of the first period with
Mitchell Hoon notching his second goal of the season with
Brandon Rozema and
Alex Johnson picking up assists. The opening tally came with 36 seconds left in the period.
Davenport (1-1) found the equalizer with a power play goal six minutes into the second period. Keelan Saworksi finished off the play with Taber Gutschick and Robert McLaughlin collecting the helpers.
Aquinas answered with three unanswered goals to close out the second period.
Xavier Erickson scored on the power play roughly two minutes after Saworksi. That was followed by even strength goals by
Logan Wesolek and
Nicola Vogel.Â
It was the first goal of the season for both Wesolek and Erickson. Wesolek's goal was unassisted and the first of his collegiate career, while
Christian Look had assists on the goals by Erickson and Vogel.
Ben Cesario and
Ryan Kleber also chipped in with assists.
The Saints added a late insurance goal from freshman
Nick Dashner, who scored his first collegiate goal. The assists went to
Brendan McCatty and Johnson.
Ongoing trips to penalty box plagued the flow of the game as over 25 combined penalties were called with four players (two from each team) receiving game misconducts.
AQ goaltender
Michael Allman made 53 saves in his first appearance this season. Davenport heavily outshot Aquinas, 54-26, despite the Saints coming away with a 5-1 win.
Next up, Aquinas faces in-city rival Calvin next weekend with a home-and-away series. The Saints host the Knights at 7:40 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 29) at the Southside Ice Arena. The return game will be at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 30) at Calvin's home ice at the Eagles Ice Center.
