Strassioto Ties AQ Shutout Record in 2-0 Win at Kalamazoo

Ricardo Rittersberger scores both goals to power the Saints offense

Kalamazoo, Mich. — Aquinas fifth-year senior goalkeeper Antonio Strassioto made two saves to pick up his 23rd career shutout victory Wednesday night (Sept. 6) in a 2-0 road victory against Kalamazoo College. Strassioto is now level with Sean Fischbach (1997-2000) for the most career clean sheets by an Aquinas goalie in the program's history.

While keeping the Kalamazoo Hornets (2-2) scoreless was the first step toward getting back into the win column, the Saints (2-1) also needed to find the back of the net. Ricardo Rittersberger put the weight on his shoulders again and delivered by scoring a brace.

Rittersberger, who scored AQ's lone goal in the Saints' loss last Saturday against Taylor, continued his goal scoring hot streak with two more on Wednesday. The junior forward from Germany first stepped up to the penalty spot and got Aquinas on the scoreboard first in the 27th minute. It was AQ's first penalty kick of the season.

Early into the second half, Rittersberger popped up again. Mason Sills crossed in a low-driven ball to the front post and Rittersberger slid in and knocked the ball into the roof of the net with authority. Sills now has two assists in the Saints' first three games.

Aquinas firmly outshot Kalamazoo 17-9 (13-2 shots on target) during the contest. The 13 shots on target for the Saints was a new season-high.

AQ's starting backline of Milan Hoeffnagel, Joe Lockey, Josh Freeman-Wright and Jesunifemi Ojutalayo never came out of the contest and played all 90 minutes in front of Strassioto. It was Ojutalayo's debut showing this season after he missed the Saints' first two games. He played a vital role in the center of AQ's backline a year ago.

The Saints now come back home for four straight games at the AQ Athletic Field in Grand Rapids, Mich. The first two home games are this weekend with AQ facing off against Trinity Christian on Saturday (Sept. 9) at 3 p.m. and then Alma on Sunday (Sept. 10) at 3 p.m.
