Campbellsville, Ky. — The No. 7-ranked Aquinas women's soccer team picked up a statement road win Thursday night (Sept. 7) with a 3-1 victory over No. 24-ranked Campbellsville.
Senior forward
Laia Cunill scored twice — once in each half — to open her goal scoring account this season. But, it was true freshman
Emily Gignac who scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute after shielding off two defenders who were tugging at her jersey. Powering her way through, Gignac kept control of the ball and finished past the goalkeeper.
For the longest time, it appeared that Cunill's first half goal was going to hold up. Cunill opened the scoring by cutting the ball to side-step defender before putting in what looked to be a cross from the wing at first. The trajectory of the ball, however, saw Cunill's cross turn into a shot from an impossible angle. The ball cleared the goalkeeper and dipped under the crossbar for a stunning goal.
AQ (2-0-1) went to the locker room up 1-0.
Campbellsville (1-4) drew even in the 64th minute on a corner kick whipped in by Angeline Kieh. Waiting at the back post, Alba Vea got her head onto the end of it and directed the ball past sprawling AQ goalkeeper
Kayla Shuk.
Seven minutes later, Gignac picked the perfect time to score her first collegiate goal. Cunill added the insurance tally in the 81st minute on a left-footed finish into the bottom right corner.
Brittney Probst picked up the assist for her first point with the Saints.
Aquinas doubled Campbellsville's shots, 16-8 (6-3 shots on target). Campbellsville had four more corner kicks (7-3). Both teams committed nine fouls.
The Saints have another road match on Saturday (Sept. 9) in Kentucky against (RV) Lindsey Wilson. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
