Grand Rapids, Mich. – The AQ men's basketball team took its three-game winning streak in this evening's (Jan. 13) against the Cornerstone Golden Eagles. Cornerstone entered the game on a four-game winning streak of its own and extended that streak to five after today's game. CU grabbed the lead early and never looked back, winning the game 85-64.
AQ's first loss in weeks brings its record to 9-7 with a 6-4 conference record. The Golden Eagles improve to 10-6 with a 6-4 WHAC record.
Cornerstone 85, Aquinas 64
After Cornerstone scored the first five points of the game,
Menalito McGee responded with a layup to score AQ's first points of the game. A run from the Golden Eagles put them ahead by ten points, but
Devon Boyd responded with a three to cut the deficit back down to single digits. However, a 7-0 run from the home team put CU ahead by 14 with eight minutes left to play in the first half.
Jared Lary and McGee combined for AQ's next nine points to cut the lead back to single digits again. Several minutes later, a
Ryan Weird three got the Saints within six. The home side responded with another small run at the end of the half to give the Golden Eagles a 38-27 advantage.
The game of runs continued in the second half as Cornerstone expanded its lead to 18 with a 9-2 run. Aquinas came back with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit down to 10. The two sides traded points over the next couple of minutes, but another run from CU with just five minutes left to go effectively secured the game. Cornerstone went on to win 85-64.
By the Numbers
Aquinas outscored Cornerstone in bench points (38-17), but CU held an advantage in most other categories. The Golden Eagles shot 52.5% from the field to AQ's 39.7%. Cornerstone also had more rebounds (37-32), assists (21-12), blocks (10-1), and steals (10-3). CU translated those steals into 22 points off turnovers.
Lary set a career-high in points with the first twenty-point game of his career. He shot 7-11 from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line for an incredibly efficient night shooting. He bolstered his stat line with four rebounds and one assist.
