Saints Drop to Lawrence Tech

Aquinas nearly splits with LTU but loses in overtime

Farmington Hills, Mich. — The Aquinas men's hockey team recently (Jan. 26 & 27) completed their two-game series with Lawrence Tech. After a hectic night on the ice the first game closed 6-2 in favor of the Blue Devils. The second night the Saints had a better showing and managed to bring the game to overtime. But due to a quick goal LTU skated away with the win by the score of 3-2.

This series pushes the Saints to a season overall of 15-15 (10-9).

 

Aquinas 2, Lawrence Tech 6

The Blue Devils had a dominant start to the first period as they were all over the Saints. AQ held the LTU advances but finally broke after five minutes due to a power play. The Blue Devils capitalized on another power play nine minutes later. Then with just 33 seconds left in the first, Lawrence Tech stamped in another goal. 

 

As the horn sounded the Blue Devils had a 3-0 lead over the Saints.

Aquinas had 11 shots to Lawrence Tech's 14.
 

The Blue Devils kept their game strong as they scored just 12 seconds into the second period. Aquinas was now down 4-0 with just about two periods of play to go. 
 

The Saints finally cracked the defense at 12:25 as Christian Look beat the keeper on a combination pass from Alex Johnson and Brendan McCatty. Tallying a score and lifting the Saints hopes for a possible battle back.

 

But the hopes slowly diminished as LTU continued to hold their grip on the contest in addition to adding two more scores late in the third.

 

With just 3 seconds remaining in the third Dylan Rumpke managed a goal, with assists from Nick Dashner and Brandon Rozema on another power play. Finishing the contest 6-2.

 

By the Numbers

Aquinas kept pace with shots (32) to LTU's (39) but were unable to continually break into the net.

The first period jumped to a start as both teams raced to get into the action. The Blue Devils went on to strike first at 18:36 due to a power play. 

 

Both teams battled for control of the ice for another chance at net. But no team scored for the remainder for the first.

 

The contest continued with its back and forth as the next goal came over 28 game minutes later. This time it was Aquinas tallying up the scoreboard.

 

The goal coming as the Saints we short handed. The goal came from Dylan Rumpke, with assists from Shane DiTullio and Christian Look, with 10:47 remaining in the second period.

 

The feverish contest continued as the game wouldn't see another goal until 12 game minutes later. LTU collected this goal at 19:02 of the third period. This goal was also the result of a power play.

 

Aquinas found their rebuttal with 8:35 to go. Alex Johnson staggered in a shot with assists from Look and Brandon Rozema. The contest continued as both teams cut up the ice, but neither were able to secure an additional goal. Bringing the 2-2 contest to overtime.

 

Unfortunately the game came to a quick close as LTU scored just 34 seconds into the overtime period. Bringing the game to a 3-2 finish.

 

By the Numbers

The Saints only allowed power plays goals.

 

Michael Allman faced 55 shots and gave up three.
