Saints Fall in Nail-Biter to UNOH

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Aquinas College women's basketball team faced a challenging conference game against the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) Racers. Both teams engaged in a defensive struggle, battling for the lead throughout the match. Ultimately, the Racers managed to secure a narrow victory. This result brings the Saints' season record to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Aquinas 64, UNOH 65

The Saints opened the game strong with a quick layup from Claire Gregwer, taking the first lead. However, the Racers responded with three three-pointers to edge ahead 9-7. Paige Guernsey answered with two jump shots to reclaim the lead for Aquinas at 12-10, but a five-point streak from UNOH pushed the Racers ahead 15-12. Emily Cline added a free throw to narrow the gap to 15-13 by the end of the first quarter.

Gregwer struck again early in the second quarter with a three-pointer to bring the Saints within one, and a layup from Brynn Reams put Aquinas back on top at 19-18. The Racers countered with an eight-point run, fueled by sharp three-point shooting, to claim the largest lead of the game at 26-19. The Saints fought back, with Guernsey and Ashlyn Wilkes each sinking two free throws to cut the deficit to 26-23. A late four-point surge by Aquinas brought the score to a close 31-30 at halftime, with UNOH holding the slight edge.

The Racers came out strong in the second half, scoring eight straight points to extend their lead to 39-30. Isabel Reemsnyder responded for the Saints with back-to-back layups, narrowing the gap to 39-34. Reemsnyder added three more points, followed by a jumper from Guernsey, bringing Aquinas within two at 44-42. However, a late flurry of three-pointers from UNOH closed out the third quarter with the Racers ahead 50-43.

The Saints came out strong in the fourth quarter, with Wilkes sinking a three-pointer and Reemsnyder adding a jumper to trim the Racers' lead to 50-48. Gaining momentum, Aquinas surged ahead with a nine-point run to flip the game in their favor, leading 57-52. UNOH mounted a final push, scoring eight points to reclaim the lead at 63-62. Despite a valiant last-minute effort from the Saints, they were unable to regain control, falling to the Racers in a heartbreaking 65-64 finish.
