Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Aquinas College men's and women's tennis teams were back on the court today (Feb. 10). The Saints' rough stretch of competition continued today as they matched into Calvin University. Both the men's and women's teams fell to the Knights by a score of 8-1.
Men: Calvin 8, Aquinas 1
Calvin swept all three doubles matches, but the number one duo of
Tom Gangov and
Mariano Arroyo gave the Knights a tough match. Gangov and Arroyo won five games, but ultimately fell 8-5.
Gangov also won both of his sets in number-one singles to give AQ its lone point on the day. He won the first set six games to two and swept the second set to take the match. Arroyo,
Jackson VanBergen,
Brandon McEachern, and
Josh Chlebek all won games but failed to win as set. Arroyo came the closest, dropping the first set of his number two-singles set 6-4.
Women: Calvin 8, Aquinas 1
Similar to the men, Calvin swept the doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches. The tandem of
Carlota Arzabe and Hannah Lourdio took five games in the number one doubles match before ultimately falling 8-5.
Arzabe took down both of her sets in convincing fashion to give the Saints a point. She won the first set 6-3 and swept the second set for the match win.
Alyssa Jack won her first set in number two doubles 6-3 and nearly won the second set, falling 6-4. Tessa Holman then got the best of Jack in the third set to win the match 2-1.
Megan Hearn, Lourdio,
Evelynn Matzke, and
Camryn Wiersema all won at least won game but fell 2-0 in their respective matches.
