Logansport, Ind. – AQ was back on the diamond yesterday (Feb. 11) to take on Union College for a Super Bowl Sunday doubleheader. The Bulldogs from Kentucky had their bats going all day, beating Aquinas in both contests. UC took the first game 14-9 and the second match 12-0.
The results move AQ to 3-3 in the young season.
Game 1: Union 14, Aquinas 9 (7 Innings)
Zach Marshall got the start on the hill for the second time this season and made short work of the side for a one-two-three inning.
Ramsey Bousseau's hot start to the season for Aquinas continued with a leadoff single to right. He then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before
Grant Martin hit him in for an early lead.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the third inning after successful small ball and a homer put the "visitors" ahead. AQ tied the game in the bottom of the frame with some error help from Union. UC came back in the top of the fourth to knock in another run for a 3-2 game.
Both teams settled in for a couple of innings until chaos ensued in the final two innings of the game. Union tallied nine runs in the top of the sixth after a series of players reaching base due to being hit by a pitch and five hits for a 12-2 lead.
The Union College rally woke up the Aquinas bats as well.
Ryan Gillings and Bousseau started the game with a pair of hits before a Martin walk loaded up the bases with one out. A wild pitch and a groundout scored a pair of runs. AQ added two more runs after
Drew Mitchell hit Martin and
Nathan Wilcox home.
With two outs,
Dawson Shearer hit a double of his own to put AQ right back in the game with a six-run inning. The two teams combined for 15 runs in the sixth inning.
However, the Bulldogs managed to add on two more runs in the top of the seventh. Martin and
Chase Ingersoll doubles brought a ninth run across the plate, but the Bulldogs ended up taking the high-scoring first game.
Game 2: Union 12, Aquinas 0 (7 Innings)
Union took a 1-0 lead in the first inning at the start of the second game and never looked back. Strong pitching from UC held the Saints to just five runs throughout the game.
Conor Gausselin started the second game on the bump and allowed just three hits over three innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Ethan Pequette took over in the fourth and pitched two scoreless innings of his own. It wasn't until the sixth inning that Union broke open the scoring.
The Bulldogs added on four runs in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh to secure the series sweep.
