Byron Center, Mich. — The Aquinas women's ice hockey team took the ice Saturday (Feb. 17) for their final match of the season. AQ once again hosted the #13 Redhawks of Miami. This contest proved to be suspenseful as no team managed to tally the scoreboard in regulation. Even after an overtime period, no team was crowned a victor. The contest headed to a shootout. This is where the Saints secured the first goal of the game. The contest was then sealed with another saved shot by Aquinas. AQ upsets the Redhawks, 0 (1) - 0 (0).
This win cements Aquinas's season to 4-17-1.

The first period was nearly a mirror to the night previous as Miami continued to swoop and soar around the Aquinas net. But no matter the occasion each attempt at net was thwarted. The Saints had a handful of attempts but couldn't beat the keeper. The horn sounded the end of the first, 0-0.
The second period once again saw AQ come to life, another mirror to the previous night of play. This time the Saints countered Miami's energy with their own. But still. no team was able to net a goal. As the buzzer came to sound, the contest still stood at 0-0.
The third period saw the play return to the claws of Miami. The Redhawks applied the pressure but were continuously denied by AQ keeper Kaydnce Romijn. But the Miami defense had the same story to tell as Aquinas was also unable to find the back of the net. At the final horn of regulation, the scoreboard still read 0-0.
The contest was headed to overtime.
Due to a late penalty by AQ in the third, overtime commenced as a 4v3. Even with the Redhawks advantage the Saints held on. After a whistle the play dropped to three-on-three. Here Miami had a number of chances, but each time Romijn was there to keep the contest afoot.
Much of the overtime period was in the claws of the Redhawks, but they couldn't keep the Saints down. The horn sounded and the game turned to a shootout to claim a winner.
Aquinas elected to shoot first, the shot was saved.

Lauryn Wood was the last shooter. Wood took the ice and began a slow approach. Taking it wide right and with a move to the left with a flick, she pocketed a goal for the Saints.
The Saints rejoiced as the fans in the stands erupted, but a hush quieted the crowed as Miami still had one shooter left.
The shooter approached with the game on the line. In a last effort to keep the shootout alive, she made a quick move but Romijn was putting on a clinic and saved the shot and the game.
With Romijn's save the Saints had upset the #13 Miami Redhawks and go out with a win on senior night.

In total AQ keeper Romijn faced 84 shots from the #13 Redhawks in regulation and 87 total, allowing 0. Giving her a perfect shutout on the evening.
Wood was the additional shootout hero as she netted the only point in the whole contest.
