Grand Rapids, Mich. – The men's basketball squad was back on "Coach Bo" court tonight (Feb. 21) for the final time this season. Prior to the game, Aquinas honored
Bennett Sinner,
Jared Dugener, and
Bronson Sysum for all of their hard work and dedication to the men's basketball program during Senior Night.
The Saints battled in a heated matchup against rival Cornerstone University. The Golden Eagles have been on a rampage as of late, taking a nine-game winning streak into the contest tonight. CU turned that win streak into 10 after a strong second half pushed the Golden Eagles past Aquinas.
Tonight's result ultimately has no impact on the conference standings as the 13-14 Saints will remain the number seven seed in the conference tournament.
Cornerstone 101, Aquinas 75
Cornerstone built an early lead, but a
Donovan Brown-Boyd three cut the deficit to just two with 15 minutes to go in the half. Another Brown-Boyd three kept the contest a one-possession game, but the Cornerstone offense started firing on all cylinders. Cornerstone grew its lead to 13 points before Aquinas was able to get its offense in a groove.
AQ reduced the lead back down to single digits before the game started getting chippy. There were 19 personal fouls between the two teams in the first half as both teams were pouring points in. The back-and-forth contest continued until the final whistle of the half with Cornerstone maintaining a 48-41 advantage.
Brown-Boyd led the team in scoring over the first half with 13 points. Sinner, Dugener, and
Devon Boyd all had seven points.
Cornerstone's high-scoring offense never missed a beat to start the second half as they outscored AQ 17-6 over the first five minutes of the half. AQ had no answer to the Golden Eagle's three point attack as the visitors drained three after three on their way to a large lead. Cornerstone went on to finish the match with a 101-75 victory.
