Aquinas Stumbles in Road Matchup Against No. 21 Indiana Tech

Blackwell scores 24 as the Warriors remain perfect in conference play.

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Saints were on the road this afternoon (Feb. 3) to finish out their three-game road stand. AQ ran into No. 21-ranked Indiana Tech, who was undefeated in conference play up until this point in the season.

Tech's record remained perfect after the 40 minutes of play, improving to 16-0 in WHAC play with a 78-54 win over Aquinas.

This result slides Aquinas down to 5-11 in conference play after dropping the last five contests.

AQ scored the first four points of the game after layups from Ashlyn Wilkes and Ciara Hardy. Indiana Tech responded with a layup of its own and a three from Amaris Lowery to take the lead. Alona Blackwell tied the game at six, but another Indiana Tech three would put the nationally ranked side ahead for good. Blackwell and Claire Gregwer combined for ten more points in the first quarter to keep Aquinas within six points.

The tandem of Blackwell and Gregwer brought Aquinas within two points early in the second quarter, but a massive 15-0 run from the Warriors put Indiana Tech way out in front to end the half. The first half ended with the home side ahead 44-27. IT shot 44% from the field and 5-12 from three.

Aquinas kept the second half more competitive, as Tech only outscored AQ 34-27 over the final 20 minutes of play.

By the Numbers

Indiana Tech capitalized off turnovers and second-chance points throughout the game, leading Aquinas 19-0 and 17-2 in those respective categories.

For the game, Aquinas shot 55.6% from three and converted 19 field goals to IT's 25. AQ only had one fewer rebound (40-41) as both teams had 31 defensive boards.

Blackwell ended the game with a team-high 24 points, shooting 9-18 from the field and 3-5 from three. She added three rebounds and a steal to her stat line. Gregwer finished the contest with nine points and six boards. 

Hardy picked up a team-best nine rebounds to pair with her seven points. Paige Guernsey had three assists, four rebounds, one steal, and four points.

Aquinas returns to the Sturrus Center on Wednesday (Feb. 7) with a date against Cleary University. Tip-off is scheduled for its normal time at 5:30 p.m.
