Orlando, Fla. — The Aquinas College Tennis Teams have started their spring break tennis tour with the opening match against the Lions of Emerson. The men were able to narrowly take down the Lions with a score of 5-4. Unfortunately the women were unable to match the task and lost 6-3.
Men:
Aquinas 5, Emerson 4
AQ was feeling just right in their opening doubles as both Aquinas pairs managed to find success.
Tom Gangov and
Mariano Arroyo found their beat and notched an 8-4 victory. While
Jackson VanBergen and
Brandon McEachern collected their win 8-5.
For singles play, Gangov won out (6-4,6-2), VanBergen triumphed (6-2,6-0), McEachern tallied (6-1,6-1). Arroyo came up short with (6-2, 6-3), and
Josh Chlebek also fell with a showing of (6-2, 6-2).
This is the Saints first win of the season and bumps them to a 1-6 standing.
Women:
Emerson 6, Aquinas 3
The ladies won two out of the three doubles pairings.
Carlota Arzabe and
Ruth Rabaut closely escaped with a win (8
7-7
2).
Camryn Wiersema and Hanna Lourido had a similar successful thriller (8
7-7
4).
Alyssa Jack and
Megan Hearn were unable to complete the sweep and faltered (8-2).
Singles is where Emerson changed the beat of the contest as
Evelynn Matzke was the only Saint to come out with a turn-around win (6-7, 6-0, 10-4)
This loss bumps the ladies to 1-6 overall.

The girls are back in action for Spring Break play on Thursday (Mar. 14) against the Bryant Bulldogs. But the boys are straight to it on Tuesday (Mar. 12) against Warner.
