Sylvania, Ohio – The men's volleyball team continued its tough road schedule with a matchup against the No. 13-ranked Lourdes Gray Wolves. Lourdes entered the match today with a 12-0 conference record and improved to 13-0 with a three-set win over the Saints. AQ's rebuilding season continued as they now represent a 3-17 record.
Lourdes 3, Aquinas 0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-17)
The first set began close as
Connor Staats put down three early kills and
Alexander Rodriguez and
Noah Smith-Slosar combined for a pair of blocks to come back to a 12-9 deficit. However, Lourdes went on a series of small runs to go ahead 21-14. AQ picked up a couple of points due to Gray Wolves' errors, but the hosts closed out the first set with a three-point run.
Set number two started more in AQ's favor as the Saints held a slim 11-10 lead following a handful of kills from Staats, Smith-Slosar, and
Chase Gil. Lourdes began to turn the tides of the set with a 6-1 run as Aquinas failed to find its footing. LU closed out the second set with a four-point run in this set to take a 2-0 match lead.
The final set followed a similar formula as the previous two sets. AQ battled hard to begin the set and trailed just 14-13 following a three-point run. However, once again, Lourdes went on a bit of a run and AQ was unable to recover, dropping the third set 25-17.
By the Numbers
Aquinas acquired more blocks than Lourdes tonight (7-3), but the hosts led in every other category.
Staats led the team in both kills (8) and aces (3) while also picking up three digs and a block assist.
