WLAX Rounds Out Season on Senior Day

AQ unable to match SHU

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas College women's lacrosse team held their final match of the season at the AQ Athletic Field against Siena Heights. Also being the final home game of the season for the Saints, a senior ceremony was held pregame. This contest was an important one for AQ as a win would grant them entry into the WHAC Tournament. Aquinas went on to start the contest with the first score, but were unable to keep up with Siena Heights. At the final call,kk SHU defeated AQ with a score of 17-10.

Shaylin Rings found the first eruption of cheers for the contest as she drove in a pass from Kennadie Minerich with 12:06 remaining in the first quarter. But Siena Heights seemed to take hold from here on out. Siena went on to score three straight, bumping the score to 3-1. Rings answered the Siena Heights offensive with an unassisted goal.

SHU made sure to go out of the first quarter with the last goal as they found one with less than 40 seconds remaining. At the horn, SHU was out in front, 4-2.

At thehe beginning the second, AQ punched in a goal first. Katelyn Hall notched one from a Trinity Reynoso pass. SHU found one soon after the Aquinas rebuttal. This time, AQ answered the call with two back-to-back goals from Minerich within 65 seconds, evening the field to 5-5.

Five more goals were to be had in the last five minutes of play. SHU made up the first four, and Alex Sullivan snatched the final AQ goal fo the half with a pass from Rings. The SHU offensive pushed the difference to 9-6.

The third quarter saw a frenzy as eight total goals were collected. Siena Heights claimed five while AQ stamped three. Rings, Sophia Schmader from Minerich, and Ashley Suske from Minerich were the ones to tally for AQ. 

The final quarter of play began with another AQ goal once again from the combination of Rings and Minerich. Bring the difference to 14-10. Unfortunately Aquinas could not find any other goals as Siena found three more. 

At the horn the Saints of Siena Heights had dashed the Saints of Aquinas post season hopes with a 17-10 finish. 

By the Numbers

Minerich maintained her scoring prowess with six total points, two goals and four assists.

Rings followed up with five points, four goals and one assist.

Schmader, Suske, Hall, Sullivan, and Reynoso all tagged in with one point.

Aquinas managed 26 shots to SHU's 38.

Keeper Kennedy Stilson found 12 saves to Siena Height's nine.

Aquinas collected 29 ground balls to SHU's 25. Alexis Villarini collect eight ground balls on the day, meaning she is now the leading ground ball earner in a career in AQ history with a total of 179. Surpassing Lauren Sanford's 171.

Siena Heights earned 18 draw controls to AQ's 13.

Up Next

This defeat brought the conclusion of the 2024 women's lacrosse season. The team will now turn their focus to preparing for their 2025 season.
