Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas College #7 men's lacrosse team held their final regular season game on Saturday (Apr. 13) at home against #10 Siena Heights. This final home contest was also AQ's Senior Day. This contest was a battle of the Saints, #7 Aquinas vs #10 Siena Heights. SHU struck first, but AQ struck more frequently and claimed victory in this National Top 10 match up. AQ rejoiced with a 13-10 win at the AQ Athletic Field.
Aquinas 13, Siena Heights 10
Siena Heights was the first team to find paydirt at the AQ Athletic Field. SHU opened up with the contest with a goal just 39 seconds in. This goal didn't sit right with Aquinas as they flipped the switch and went on to score four straight goals:
Cooper Nienhuis from
Cade Linnemeyer,
Braeden Williams from Linnemeyer,
TJ Murphy from
Brady Waling, and Linnemeyer from Waling.
SHU returned with one goal to answer the AQ offense to close out the quarter. The scoreboard read 4-2 at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw an equal smattering of goals for both teams. Both teams managed four goals a piece, bringing the score to 8-6. Murphy, Williams,
Dean Cooper from Waling, and Linnemeyer from Waling were all the scorers to close out the first half.
The third quarter was all AQ as Aquinas earned three goals to SHU's zero. Linnemeyer from Murphy,
Alex Rolands, and Waling were the capitalizers in this quarter. Entering the fourth the differential was pushed to a 11-6 difference.
Siena Heights regained strength in the final quarter and out maneuvered AQ, but were unable to amount their comeback due to the Aquinas defense. For the fourth SHU out scored AQ 4-2, but were unable to beat the difference.
Nienhuis, and Williams assisted by Cooper put the final touches to the AQ scoreboard.
At the final horn AQ had won this national top 10 match up with a scoreline of 13-10.
By the Numbers
This week Linnemeyer led the charge for AQ with five points off of a hat trick and two assists.
Waling ties with five points, one goal and four assists.
Murphy notched two goals and one assists. Williams also collected a hat trick on the day.
Cooper and Nienhuis both collected two points as Rolands rallies up in the rear with one point.
Aquinas held SHU back to 27 shots while having 47 shots of their own.
Austin Hynote continues to hold it down in goal with eight saves. The AQ defense was alive as SHU had 31 turnovers to AQ's 20.
