Saints Improve Win Streak to Six With LTU Sweep

AQ's offense kept rocking today with another 25 runs.

Caledonia, Mich. – The Saints remained red hot over at the Davenport Farmer's Insurance Athletic Complex this afternoon (Apr. 15). AQ took on one of the best teams in the WHAC in Lawrence Tech, but Aquinas buzzed right through the Blue Devils. The Saints won 13-6 in game one and then 12-2 in game two with two impressive performances.

Aquinas is now on a six-game win streak and has improved to 19-19 overall and 11-9 in the WHAC.

Game 1: Aquinas 13, Lawrence Tech 6 (7 Innings)

Zach Marshall retired the side to start the game before the Saints tore the laces off the baseball in the bottom of the first. Ramsey Bousseau, Nicolas Verdugo, and Mark Binkowski all hit singles to load up the bases with no outs. Chase Ingersoll hit a sacrifice fly to bring the first run home before hits from Grant Martin and Ryan Gillings scored three more runs.

AQ wasn't done yet, as it scored two more runs for a 6-0 lead after just one period of play.

LTU went three up, three down again in the second before hits from Verdugo and Gillings helped score two more runs to give the hosts a commanding 8-0 advantage.

However, the Blue Devils scored in the next three innings and held AQ off the scoreboard to cut the deficit to just two runs after the tops of the fifth. The Saints finally managed to get the bats going again and shift the momentum in the bottom of the fifth frame. JD Gillies singled, and Nathan Wilcox crushed his second home run of the season to give AQ 10 runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, an assist from the sun helped the Saints score three more runs. Bousseau hit a leadoff triple and Binkowski was able to record a triple of his own after his ball was hit directly into the right-field sun. Ingersoll doubled down on the sun and hit another ball directly into the right field sun and made it all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run, putting AQ ahead 13-6.

Blake Waibel retired the side in the top of the seventh to give AQ a huge win and continue its win streak. Marshall earned his first winning decision of the season after pitching 5.2 innings with six strikeouts.

Game 2: Aquinas 12, Lawrence Tech 2 (7 Innings)

Once again, the Saints struck first in game two with the first runs coming in the second inning. AQ loaded up the bases after Martin was hit by a pitch, Wilcox singled, and Gillings singled. Gillies joined the singles party with one of his own to drive in the first two runs of the game. A couple of batters later, Bousseau hit another triple, his seventh of the season, to take a three-run lead.

Doubles from Binkowski and Martin in the bottom of the third put AQ ahead by four before LTU finally scored themselves, cutting the AQ lead to two.

Aquinas responded with a run in the fourth before blowing the game open in the bottom of the fifth. The Blue Devils made a pitching change and AQ had no issues adjusting. Six different Saints picked up hits in the fifth as AQ racked up seven runs to take a 12-2 lead.

Conor Gausselin kept LTU off the scoreboard in the sixth inning to end his outing with no earned runs allowed through six innings pitched. Kaleb Mitchelson took over in the seventh and got out of a jam to keep LTU off the scoreboard for one more inning and end the game in the seventh.
