Box Score Grand Rapids, Mich. — The start of the season has been a steep climb for the Aquinas women's hockey team. Between an ever-growing list of injuries, a conference rule that prevents players from suiting up before turning 18, and some understandable frustrations that have come with a short bench, the Saints have had to fight through more adversity than most teams will see in an entire year. While the wins haven't come yet, this group continues to show heart, commitment, and a willingness to battle through the rough patches. For Head Coach Emma Hoch, the focus remains on effort, accountability, and building a culture that will pay off long-term — even if the results on the scoreboard don't reflect the hard work happening behind the scenes.
UM-Dearborn 13, Aquinas 0
The Saints were once again limited in numbers on Saturday night, but that didn't stop them from competing hard until the final whistle. Goaltender Lila Dial faced a barrage of 62 shots, turning aside numerous scoring chances to keep her team afloat. Defenders Anna Sherman, Joleena Manone, and Kate Kramm each logged heavy minutes, while Lorelei Weinrick, Sydney Clark, and Paige Ike battled physically, showing toughness in front of the net and along the boards. Forwards Bridgett Clay, Anna Castle, and Reyna Dominczak worked to generate offense, creating a few quality looks despite limited possession time. Elizabeth Bruso and Kaylee Daigle provided important energy shifts, helping keep the team's morale up during a difficult match-up. Even in defeat, the Saints demonstrated grit and a refusal to back down — qualities that will serve them well as they continue to develop and build for the future.
Inside the Numbers
• Goaltender Lila Dial made 49 saves through the first two periods and finished with 62 total
• The Saints dressed just 11 skaters
• Aquinas blocked several shots and drew two penalties in the first period
• Despite the loss, the team's defensive zone communication showed steady improvement
Coach's Comment
Head Coach Emma Hoch reflected on her team's effort and their continued growth through adversity:
"It's been a really tough stretch for us, but the heart of this group never changes. We've got players battling through injuries, others who can't suit up yet because of conference age rules, and still, they show up ready to work and support one another. Nights like this are hard, but they build the toughness and unity that every good program needs. We'll keep pushing forward and get better together."
