Saints Wrap Up Spring Stretch with Split Against Lourdes

Grant Martin Shines as Aquinas Takes Game 1, Lourdes Powers Through in Game 2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Sylvania, OH – The AQ Saints baseball team has been on a non-stop run since their spring break trip to Florida. While the squad has been playing solid baseball, the intensity of constant games can be draining for both players and coaches. As the team wraps up this extended stretch, Head Coach Chris LaMange is content with a split in Ohio against Lourdes.

Game 1: Aquinas 6, Lourdes 2
The Saints delivered a well-rounded performance in a 6-2 win over Lourdes at Mercy Field. Aquinas wasted no time, taking an early lead in the second inning. JT LaMange reached base on an error, allowing Grant Martin to cross the plate, and Drew Mitchell followed up with an RBI single to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage. The offense continued to roll in the third when Chase Robinson singled through the right side, scoring Luke LaCross and extending the lead to three runs.

The pivotal moment came in the fifth inning when Martin launched a three-run homer to left-center, driving in Robinson and Ramsey Bousseau. That gave Aquinas a commanding 6-0 lead. Martin finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run, while Robinson also contributed two hits and an RBI. The Saints totaled nine hits in the game.

Lourdes fought back in the sixth inning with a ground out from Kennedy that scored an unearned run, followed by a double from Brinson in the seventh that plated Mullins. Despite the late rally, the Saints' pitching staff held firm, and the defense limited Lourdes to just six hits and committed only one error.

Inside the Numbers (Game 1):

  • Grant Martin: 2-3, double, home run, 3 RBIs, 2 runs
  • Chase Robinson: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 run
  • Pitching Comparison: AQ – 7 K's, 2 BB's; Lourdes – 8 K's, 1 BB
  • Cameron Gross: W (2-2), 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's

Game 2: Lourdes 15, Aquinas 8
Despite a strong offensive showing, the Saints were unable to overcome Lourdes in a 15-8 loss in the second game at Mercy Field. Aquinas racked up 14 hits, but the early deficit proved insurmountable as Lourdes' bats continued to heat up.

The Gray Wolves came out strong, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a grand slam. The Saints quickly responded in the second, with Ramsey Bousseau clearing the bases with a three-run triple to cut the lead to 4-3. However, Lourdes answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second to regain control.

Dylan Nguyen sparked the Saints with a solo homer in the third, but Lourdes' offense kept pushing, adding three more runs in the frame. Nguyen drove in another run in the fourth, pulling Aquinas within four at 9-5.

Aquinas managed to add a few more runs in the final two innings, including a double from Robinson that drove in Nguyen and a run scored on a balk. However, the gap was too large to overcome.

The Saints struggled on the mound, giving up 17 hits and 15 earned runs. Hudson Lubbers (1-2) took the loss after a rough first inning, allowing five runs. Sam Pollack, Travis Weide, Mark Kalahar, and Grant Martin finished out the game, with Weide delivering the best performance, allowing just one run over 2.2 innings.

Aquinas ends the long stretch with a 15-18 overall record and an 8-4 mark in the WHAC.

Coach's Comments:
Head Coach Chris LaMange on the doubleheader split and the state of his team:
"Great performance on the mound from Cameron Gross in Game 1—he was key to our victory. In Game 2, give Lourdes credit; they hit the ball very well and just beat us. This marks the end of a fantastic stretch of baseball for us, 14-4 since Florida—but it's nice to get a full week off before we return to action next Saturday."

Up Next:
The Saints will enjoy a well-deserved break before returning to action next Saturday. AQ will host Madonna at 1:00 PM, with Game 2 scheduled for 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1. Joey Sutherlin will stream the games, providing play-by-play on the AQ YouTube channel. Full recaps and updates will be available at AQSaints.com.
