Box Score 2 Grand Rapids, MI – The AQ softball team continues to shift momentum as unpredictably as April weather in Michigan. Riding a four-game win streak into Sunday, the Saints couldn't find their offensive rhythm and dropped both games of a WHAC doubleheader to visiting Northwestern Ohio.
Game 1: UNOH 4, Aquinas 2 (8 Innings)
Despite a pair of RBI hits from Carson Hendrickson and a strong complete-game performance by Raeann Drummond, the Saints came up just short in a hard-fought 4-2 extra-inning loss.
Aquinas struck early in the bottom of the first. Patrina Marsh reached on an error and later came around to score on a Hendrickson single to right. Hendrickson advanced to second on the throw, giving AQ an early 1-0 edge.
The Racers responded quickly, plating two in the second with a triple to deep center and a follow-up RBI single to take a 2-1 lead.
The Saints knotted the game in the sixth when Hendrickson delivered again, roping a double to left center to bring Marsh—who had walked earlier in the inning—home for her second run of the game.
Locked at 2-2, the contest went to extras. In the top of the eighth, UNOH came through with clutch hitting, using an RBI double and an RBI single to jump ahead 4-2.
Aquinas showed signs of life in the bottom half as Marsh led off with a single, but three straight outs ended the rally attempt.
Drummond gave the Saints a fighting chance, going the distance with eight innings of work. She allowed 10 hits and four earned runs, striking out four and walking none in the tough-luck loss.
Offensively, AQ managed just three hits—two from Hendrickson and one from Marsh—and couldn't capitalize on key opportunities, including a prime chance with runners at second and third and just one out in the first.
Inside the Numbers (Game 1):
• Carson Hendrickson: 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBIs
• Raeann Drummond: 8.0 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K (complete game)
• Patrina Marsh: 1-for-3, 2 R, BB
Game 2: UNOH 5, Aquinas 0
In the nightcap, the Saints were again held in check at the plate, falling 5-0 behind a dominant pitching performance from UNOH's Lanie Wooten.
After three scoreless innings, the Racers broke through with an unearned run in the fourth. A three-run fifth followed, highlighted by a two-run double and a fielding error that allowed another run to score.
UNOH added a solo homer in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Sophia Pavese pitched a complete game for Aquinas, scattering nine hits and allowing just three earned runs while striking out five. However, two AQ errors contributed to a pair of unearned runs.
The Saints collected five hits—one each from Hendrickson, Katie Carlson, Jaden Benschoter, Abby Nieswender, and Angelina Lanham—but were unable to string them together. AQ stranded six baserunners and never advanced anyone past second base.
Wooten, who also earned the win in Game 1 after closing the final 2.1 innings, shut out the Saints with five strikeouts and just one walk.
The doubleheader sweep dropped Aquinas to 20-18 overall and 5-9 in WHAC play.
Inside the Numbers (Game 2):
• Carson Hendrickson: 1-for-2, BB
• Katie Carlson: 1-for-3
• Sophia Pavese: 7.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 5 K
Coach's Comment:
Head Coach Brad Koch was direct following the games: "Girls battled again today, but couldn't get the knock-out punch. Couple of good efforts in the circle, couldn't get the run support."
