Saints Fall Just Short in Crosstown Clash with Cornerstone, 2–1

Hasovic Goal Not Enough as Aquinas Edged by Golden Eagles

Box Score

Grand Rapids, MI – It's so cliché, but the difference between a win and loss is inches and luck. If either or both go against your team, a "W" can turn into an "L." That was the fickle fate of fortune for the AQ Saints Men's Soccer team on Wednesday evening as they lost a close match-up with crosstown rival and WHAC foe Cornerstone.

Cornerstone 2, Aquinas 1

The Saints struck first late in the opening half when Fikret Hasovic calmly buried his second goal of the season in the 45th minute to give Aquinas a 1–0 lead heading into the break. Hasovic was active throughout, generating chances on set pieces and corners that kept the Golden Eagles on their heels.

Aquinas outshot Cornerstone 9–2 in the first half and leaned heavily on the work rate of Trae Collins, who fired three shots and constantly pressured the opposing backline. In addition, Emmanuel Bedolla and Bryce Schaner each created looks in front of goal, forcing multiple saves from the Cornerstone keeper.

The second half, however, belonged to the hosts. Despite saves from goalkeeper Dario Cela, Cornerstone equalized in the 50th minute and added the game-winner just over ten minutes later. Cela finished with one save, but his leadership helped the Saints weather several dangerous moments.

Down the stretch, the Saints pressed hard for the equalizer. Evan Goodfellow tallied two shots on goal, while Chase Jacobs Gries and substitute Carter Hagan each threatened to bring AQ level. Despite 10 corner kicks on the evening and 14 total shots compared to just 9 for Cornerstone, Aquinas couldn't find the second goal they needed.

Inside the Numbers

• Aquinas outshot Cornerstone 14–9
• AQ held a 10–0 advantage in corner kicks
Fikret Hasovic scored his second goal of the season
• Saints fall to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3 in WHAC play

Coach's Comments

Following the heartbreaking defeat, Head Coach Luke Ruff spoke about the game and his team:

"We're still trying to find our identity, and tonight showed how small the margins can be. We had stretches of great play, but in a rivalry match like this, one or two moments decide the game. I believe this group is growing, and we'll continue to take steps forward."
