AQ MVB Drops Tough Reverse Sweep After 2-0 Start Against Golden Eagles

Strong Start Slips Away as Saints Fall in Five at Cornerstone

Grand Rapids, Mich. — Just up the road and right into the heart of a rivalry, Aquinas Men's Volleyball made the short trip to Cornerstone with a long-term opportunity in front of them. In a match that demanded grit, composure, and execution, the Saints had the chance to dig in, step up, and play to the level this roster is capable of — and what better stage than a WHAC battle against an arch rival to prove it.

Cornerstone 3, Aquinas 2 (21-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-12)

For two sets, the Saints looked every bit like a team ready to make a statement. Aquinas came out aggressive and composed, taking control early behind a balanced attack and steady ball control. Jayden Sturdevant led the offensive charge with 16 kills, while Joseph Hodgson added seven kills on an efficient .278 hitting clip. Connor Staats chipped in seven kills, and Alexander Rodriguez made his presence felt at the net with six block assists to go along with four kills.

Set one saw the Saints settle in quickly, using strong distribution from setter Ryden Luedtke — who finished with 30 assists — to spread the offense and keep Cornerstone off balance. Aquinas hit .212 in the opening frame and followed it up with an even more efficient .269 mark in set two, cruising to a 2-0 lead and putting the Golden Eagles on their heels.

Defensively, the Saints were active and disruptive early, with Rodriguez and Staats combining for key blocks, while Colin Ilagan anchored the back row with a team-high 10 digs. Sturdevant added 11 digs for a strong two-way performance, and the Saints looked in full control heading into the intermission.

But momentum shifted in set three.

Cornerstone began to find its rhythm offensively, while Aquinas struggled to maintain its early efficiency. The Saints hit just .031 in the third set and couldn't regain their offensive flow. The Golden Eagles capitalized, extending rallies and forcing errors, taking the third set to spark the comeback.

Set four followed a similar script, as Cornerstone's attack continued to heat up while Aquinas couldn't quite recapture the crisp execution from the opening two frames. Despite solid efforts from Braylon Amos and Andrew Sliwinski off the bench, the Saints dropped the fourth set, sending the match to a decisive fifth.

In the final set, the Saints battled, but the early sharpness had faded. Aquinas hit negative in the frame and couldn't string together enough consistent points down the stretch. Sturdevant continued to lead the way offensively, but Cornerstone completed the reverse sweep, taking the fifth set 15-12.

The Saints finished with 40 kills and 52 digs as a team, but ultimately couldn't hold off the Golden Eagles after building the early two-set advantage.

With the loss, Aquinas moves to 4-13 overall and 2-9 in WHAC play.

Saints Snapshots

  • Fast Start, Tough Finish — AQ dominated the first two sets, hitting a combined .239 before being held to .017 over the final three.
  • Sturdevant's All-Around Night — 16 kills and 11 digs highlighted a strong two-way performance.
  • Rodriguez at the Net — Six block assists anchored a solid front-row defensive effort.
  • Luedtke Running the Show — 30 assists as the Saints spread the offense effectively early.
  • Momentum Shift in Set Three — The turning point as Cornerstone flipped the match with improved hitting and extended rallies.

Coach's Comments
Following the game, Head Coach Michael Crane reflected on the loss and the missed opportunity:

"We've shown multiple times this season that we can play at a really high level, and the first two sets are proof of that. But in this league, against teams like Cornerstone, you have to sustain it. We had chances to close that match out, and we didn't capitalize. That's the next step for this group — learning how to finish."
