Rockford, Mich. — Mama said there would be days like this… but nobody said they'd all show up at once.
For the Saints, a team that returned from Florida at 18-4 with swagger, confidence, and the look of a group ready to make noise in the WHAC, the early days of conference play have delivered a gut check. After running into a nationally-ranked Madonna squad, Aquinas returned home looking to reset, respond, and defend their brand-new home field at the Meijer Sports Complex.
Instead, rivalry emotion met a team still searching for its footing.
And while the fight was there — flashes of the team the Saints know they are — Cornerstone capitalized late in both games to sweep the doubleheader.
Cornerstone 9, Aquinas 7 (Game 1)
Game one had all the makings of a statement win for Aquinas — and for a stretch, it looked exactly like that.
The Saints struck first in the opening inning as Alea Fisher set the tone, reaching base and eventually coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from Katie Carlson. After Cornerstone answered with a pair of runs in the second and added two more in the third, AQ found its breakthrough moment in the bottom of the third.
And what a response it was.
McKenna Hinkle and Fisher sparked the rally at the top of the order, while Carlson delivered again with an RBI single. Abby Nieswender followed with a run-scoring hit of her own, and Daniela Anzaldua kept the line moving with another RBI knock. Bella Asai and Maci Willey added to the surge, each driving in runs as part of a six-run inning that flipped the game and gave Aquinas a 7-4 lead.
The Saints were aggressive on the bases throughout, with Hinkle swiping two bags and Karigann Cuthbert adding a pair of steals, helping AQ apply constant pressure.
But as quickly as momentum swung in favor of the Saints, Cornerstone responded.
The Golden Eagles chipped away with a run in the fourth before capitalizing on a tough sixth inning that saw a combination of timely hits and defensive miscues allow three runs to cross, turning a 7-5 Saints lead into an 8-7 deficit. Cornerstone added an insurance run in the seventh to seal it.
Despite the loss, the Saints' offense showed its potential, producing nine hits and seven runs, with multi-hit performances from Hinkle and Anzaldua and key RBIs spread throughout the lineup.
Cornerstone 10, Aquinas 2 (Game 2 – 6 innings)
Game two started with the same script the Saints have been searching for — early energy and opportunities.
Aquinas broke through in the second inning when Bella Asai ripped a double and later scored on an RBI play from Maci Willey to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
For four innings, AQ battled toe-to-toe, holding Cornerstone scoreless and getting solid early pitching from Addy Buchin, who worked through traffic and kept the game under control.
But the fifth inning proved to be the turning point.
A mix of walks, defensive miscues, and timely hits allowed Cornerstone to plate five runs and swing the momentum of the game. The Saints answered with a run of their own in the bottom half, as Asai once again played a key role, but the Golden Eagles continued to apply pressure in the sixth, adding another five runs.
Offensively, Aquinas collected six hits in the game, including knocks from Alea Fisher, McKenna Hinkle, Katie Carlson, Jadalyn Lopez, Karigann Cuthbert, and Asai, who scored both Saints runs.
Despite flashes, the Saints were unable to slow the late surge, falling 10-2.
Aquinas will have to wait another week before earning their first win in their new home stadium within the Meijer Sports Complex.

Coach's Comments
Head Coach Patty Jansen spoke about the challenges of navigating early-season conference adversity while reinforcing her squad's togetherness.
"This is a tough stretch, there's no question about it," Jansen said. "But we're seeing flashes of exactly who this team can be — that third inning in Game 1 is the standard for us. The biggest thing right now is learning how to reset. You can't let one inning or one game carry into the next. We have to stay present, trust each other, and keep competing pitch by pitch. I believe in this group, and I know if we stay with it, we're going to come out on the other side of this."
