Strong Pitching Highlights Saints’ Softball First Day in the Sunshine State

Bosgraaf Blanks Grace as AQ Opens Florida Swing

Melbourne, Fla. — If there's one thing every northern softball team knows, it's this: when you finally get to Florida, the sunshine isn't the only thing that feels good — the opportunity to actually play real games outdoors again might feel even better. After weeks of practices, cages, and trying to simulate game situations inside Michigan gyms, the Aquinas softball team finally got that opportunity Saturday as the Saints opened their Florida trip looking to sharpen the good, fix what still needs attention, and continue building the identity of a team with high expectations this spring. AQ opened the trip with a tight pitchers' duel against Grace before returning to the field later in the afternoon against Clarke.

Aquinas 1, Grace 0 (Game 1 Saturday)

The Saints opened their Florida trip the way every coach hopes to — with a win built on strong pitching, solid defense, and just enough timely offense.

Aquinas scratched across the game's only run in the fourth inning and made it stand behind a complete-game performance from Sydney Bosgraaf. The junior right-hander was sharp throughout the morning contest, working seven scoreless innings while scattering five hits and striking out four Grace hitters.

The Saints threatened early in the opening inning when McKenna Hinkle singled to center field to get things started. Katie Carlson followed with a deep fly ball that kept the Grace defense busy, but the Lancers escaped the inning without allowing a run.

Aquinas again created traffic in the second inning when Abby Nieswender reached on an error and Alea Fisher followed with a sharp single to put two runners aboard. Although the Saints couldn't capitalize in the frame, the pressure continued to build.

Carlson proved to be one of the Saints' most consistent offensive threats, collecting two doubles and finishing the game with a pair of hits. Fisher also added two hits as Aquinas totaled eight knocks in the victory.

The decisive moment arrived in the fourth inning. Nieswender blasted a double to center field to spark the rally and Olivia Tozer entered to run for her. Fisher then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third.

With the opportunity in front of her, Jadalyn Lopez delivered the clutch swing of the game, lining a single into center field that allowed Tozer to race home with the game's lone run.

From there, Bosgraaf and the Saints defense handled the rest. Grace mounted a small threat late in the game, putting runners on base in the seventh inning, but Bosgraaf remained calm in the circle and recorded the final outs to secure the 1–0 victory.

Daniela Anzaldua, Hinkle, Carlson, Nieswender, Fisher, and Lopez each recorded hits in the win as Aquinas opened the Florida trip on a positive note.

Clarke 4, Aquinas 0 (Game 2 Saturday)

The second game of the day proved to be a tougher offensive battle for the Saints as Clarke capitalized on a few early opportunities to build a lead.

The Pride scored an unearned run in the first inning before adding another in the second to take a 2–0 advantage.

Aquinas had chances to respond early. In the opening inning, Hinkle reached base with a single and Carlson worked her way aboard to give the Saints two runners on. Clarke managed to work out of the jam and keep AQ off the scoreboard.

The Saints again threatened in the third inning when Carlson ripped a double and Jadalyn Lopez reached base to create another scoring opportunity, but the Pride defense held firm once again.

Clarke extended its lead in the third inning with a two-run rally that included a run-scoring single and a double, pushing the margin to 4–0.

Despite the deficit, the Saints pitching staff continued to compete. Audrey Schindler made the start and worked two innings before Ada Bradford came on in relief. Emma Austin finished the game strongly, striking out four batters over the final 2.2 innings to keep Clarke from adding to its lead.

Offensively, Aquinas recorded four hits in the contest. Carlson and Lopez each delivered doubles while Hinkle added a single. Bella Asai also worked a pair of walks as the Saints continued to create opportunities.

AQ placed runners on base in several innings and drew five walks during the game, but Clarke managed to escape each threat and held the Saints scoreless in the nightcap.

Coach's Comments

Following the doubleheader, Head Coach Patty Jansen pointed to the strong pitching and defense as a foundation while emphasizing the need to continue developing the offense.

"We've been really strong in the circle and defensively, and that's something we can build around," Jansen said. "Sydney threw an outstanding game this morning and our staff did a great job competing all day. Now our focus is continuing to generate more offense. We had opportunities today, and the more we play outside and get these live reps, the more comfortable our hitters will become."
