Box Score 2 Rockford, Mich. — There are days in baseball when the game humbles you. Saturday was one of those days for Aquinas.
In two games that carried real weight in the WHAC race, Madonna came into Rockford and left no questions unanswered, sweeping the Saints with a pair of shutouts. It was not the day AQ wanted, needed, or expected, but championship-level teams are measured just as much by their response as by their best days. Now the mission is simple: put Saturday in the rearview, get some rest, and show up Sunday at UM-Dearborn ready to play Aquinas baseball.
Game 1 — Madonna 7, Aquinas 0
For much of the opener, this had the feel of the tight, pressure-packed conference baseball AQ has grown comfortable playing.
The Saints had chances early and often. Dylan Nguyen jumpstarted the offense with a first-inning double that immediately put pressure on the Crusaders. Austin Alcumbrack added a sharp double of his own in the second, while Joey Hysell, JT LaMange, Stephen Weinert, and Eric Bryce all found ways to reach safely as AQ consistently put runners aboard.
On the mound, Sam Pollack was more than competitive, keeping the Saints within striking distance and allowing AQ to hang around in a 1-0 game deep into the afternoon. The turning point came in the sixth, when Madonna finally broke through with a crooked number, using a two-run homer and a string of extra-base hits to stretch the lead and seize control.
Walker Brockie came on in relief to finish things off, but the damage had already turned what was a tense conference duel into a frustrating finish.
Game 2 — Madonna 9, Aquinas 0
The nightcap brought more of the same frustration, only this time Madonna slowly squeezed the game inning by inning.
Travis Weide gave AQ a steady start and kept the Crusaders from delivering an early knockout punch, but Madonna's lineup continued to stack quality at-bats and turn small openings into runs.
At the plate, Joey Hysell, Chase Robinson, JT LaMange, and Brodie Gregory each recorded hits, while Dylan Nguyen continued to grind out strong plate appearances and get on base. AQ stayed in the fight early, but a two-run fifth opened the door before Madonna used a pair of home runs over the next two innings to fully separate.
Hudson Lubbers and Brendan Burch handled the later innings, helping the Saints bullpen absorb the back half of a long day.
With the losses, Aquinas falls to 17-21 overall and 10-8 in WHAC play, while Madonna improves to 28-12 overall and 11-7 in conference action.
Saints Snapshots
- Early pressure, no breakthrough: AQ put runners aboard in multiple early innings of Game 1, but never found the momentum swing or clutch hit.
- Nguyen stayed hot: Dylan Nguyen continued to be one of AQ's most consistent bats, creating pressure throughout the doubleheader.
- Alcumbrack's quality day: Austin Alcumbrack pieced together one of the Saints' strongest offensive performances with multiple quality swings.
- Pollack and Weide competed: Both starters kept AQ within reach before sixth-inning surges changed the complexion.
- Bullpen absorbed tough innings: Brockie, Lubbers, and Burch helped preserve arms and give AQ options heading into Sunday.
- Response Sunday matters: The Saints now get an immediate chance to show their toughness against UM-Dearborn.
Coach's Comments
Head Coach Chris LaMange was honest and direct after the doubleheader.
"Unfortunately, Madonna left no doubt who the better team was today. There's not much to get excited about from either game, but that's baseball sometimes. The good thing is we get back on the bus in the morning with another chance. We have to find a way to respond and finish the weekend on a positive note."
