Rockford, Mich. — The calendar is starting to whisper "postseason," and for a young Aquinas softball team, every inning right now feels like a rehearsal for the WHAC Tournament. The Saints know the math, they know the urgency, and after sweeping Defiance they knew Sunday presented another chance to build the one thing every dangerous lower-seed needs this time of year: belief.
At worst, Aquinas needed a split to keep the momentum moving in the right direction. But a sweep? That would have been the kind of statement that turns heads around the conference.
Instead, the Saints showed something just as valuable — resilience.
After a frustrating opening-game loss, AQ refused to let the day spiral, answering with a dominant second-game response that kept the confidence trending upward as the regular season starts to narrow.
Game 1 — Lourdes 5, Aquinas 3
The opener was decided by one difficult stretch, but even then the Saints never stopped fighting.
Sydney Bosgraaf kept things manageable early before Lourdes pieced together a four-run third inning that created the separation. Emma Austin entered in relief and once again gave AQ exactly what it needed, spinning 4.1 innings of one-hit shutout relief while striking out four and giving the offense every chance to climb back.
The Saints finally broke through in the sixth. McKenna Hinkle started the rally with a single after Maci Willey worked a walk, and Katie Carlson delivered the big swing with a two-run single that instantly brought life back into the dugout. Moments later, Jadalyn Lopez followed with an RBI knock to cut the deficit to 5-3 and put the pressure squarely on Lourdes.
Daniela Anzaldua added two hits, including a late double, while Carlson finished with two RBIs and Lopez continued her steady middle-order production. AQ had the tying run within reach late, but the comeback bid came up just short.
Game 2 — Aquinas 9, Lourdes 2
This was the response Coach Patty Jansen has been waiting to see from her young group.
After Lourdes scratched across two early runs, the Saints never panicked. Alea Fisher and Maci Willey immediately set the tone offensively, while Addy Buchin gave AQ a calm, complete-game presence in the circle that let the defense and offense settle in.
The Saints took the lead for good in the third when Katie Carlson tripled and came home on a Jadalyn Lopez RBI single. Karigann Cuthbert later added a productive RBI groundout, and by the time the fifth inning arrived, the floodgates opened.
AQ exploded for five runs in the fifth, turning a 4-2 lead into a runaway. Willey ripped an RBI single, Fisher followed with a run-scoring hit, McKenna Hinkle added another RBI knock, and Carlson capped the inning with a two-run groundout that blew the game wide open.
Willey was sensational, finishing 3-for-3 with a double, triple, RBI, and two runs scored, while Fisher, Hinkle, Carlson, Lopez, Bella Asai, and Daniela Anzaldua all helped power a 12-hit attack. Buchin was outstanding in the circle, going the distance while allowing just four hits and two runs.
Following the doubleheader, the Saints are now 23-15 overall and 5-11 in WHAC play, while Lourdes sits at 9-14 overall and 6-8 in conference action.

Coach's Comments
Head Coach Patty Jansen continues to see the maturity of her young team taking shape.
"I'm really proud of the way this group battled today. Of course, we would have loved to find a way to win both, but the bigger takeaway was how we responded after the first game. This team never quit, never let the frustration carry over, and kept learning in real time. That second game win was important because it showed our growth, our toughness, and our ability to answer adversity."
